Multiple digital (non Gatso) type cameras went live between Portishead/Gordano Services and Clevedon, both directions yesterday.

In case any of you choose to bypass the congestion, and use the B road in the Gordano valley a Gatso has sprouted on the Clevedon side of Weston in Gordano.

You have been warned!

Are they live yet? They were all covered in plastic sheeting at 3.00pm.

Locations going Southbound are:

1. downslope of the Avonmouth bridge - central reservation (just before the slip road to the Gordano services)

2. About a mile and a bit further on just over the top of the long hill - central reservation - It's possible that this is aimed at Northbound traffic

3. About 800 yards further on - central reservation again - and definitely targetting Southbound traffic

4. About a mile further on just off the hard shoulder - definitely targetting Southbound traffic

5. Immediately after the Clevedon exit - central reservation - most probably targetting Southbound traffic.

They seem to be temporary ones whilst some big roadworks are carried out.

I don't think they're live just yet as the 40mph limit's not in place currently, and they have plastic bags over them (well, they did this morning any how). Also, I think they have to display camera warning signs before you get to a camera location and there aren't any at the moment.

If they are live then they'll be raking it in as everyone travels ~80mph along there, me included

Any day now though......

Definatly not live at the moment, I checked on my way home this evening. They're all covered in bubble wrap I counted five, one of which had workmen attending it (maybe to start them live). I think they're planning on six in total.

Looks like it's going to be a hell of a contra flow when they've actually got it all going!

I counted five tonight too, four with not in use bags over them.

Are they Truvello's? Didn't see any strips on the road surface so how do they calculate speed?

I think these will rake more cash in than Gatso's, as they're forward facing with no white lines on the road surface to wake-up day dreaming drivers just in the nick of time! They've gone for maximum revenue here.

They look like this:
www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/gatso12.htm

Truvello's look like this: www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/gatso09.htm

So are they laser, radar or piazzo strip operated?

If you don't know the area and travel through at say 2AM when no-ones around, doing a reasonable 50mph and get caught four times, would you lose your lisence?

I always thought you couldn't be done on the same road twice in a day, but i'm not 100% on that.

As Deeps mentioned they're using Monitron digital scameras. These are linked via ADSL to the police station so your ticket can the printed off straight away. And with no need to refill with film, they just keep on snapping

They take a rearwards picture (like Gatsos) but work via embedded sensors in the road (like Truvelos), so radar detectors won't pick them up.

All five are currently bagged with a sixth one going up northbound just before the Clevedon junction. They've also got to paint the lines on the road for all of them as a secondary means of speed measuring. Currently only one of them has these lines (northbound just before Portishead turn off).

Kitt, I'm sure atleast some of them are forward facing, on the split level section.
Is there any flash at all from these things? Are you sure they're using sensors in the road? Could be laser or radar too according to that link.
I don't think they'll be painting the white markings on the road, maybe just some discreet dots... we'll see.
As you say, the one before Clevedon Jnct has been painted already, so assume a normal Gatso there.

Is the contraflow in operation yet? They could well end up rear facing when thats up and running.

You can be done as many times as you pass the scamera at over the set limit in as short a time as you can manage it!

Not aimed at you steve z, but where do people get these ideas? Another thread has the suggestion that speed limits change at night! - Streaky

PS - any HTML tagging that appears in the quote above is nothing to do with me ... that's how it appeared! - S

I'm sure someone will correct me, but I'm almost certain that I've read (on here) about cases where a car going through two speed cameras in fairly close proximity have been counted as one offence? You can't be prosecuted for the same crime twice, so surely it can be argued that exceeding the speed limit on a stretch of road is a single offence, irrespective of the number of cameras?

The whole trouble with speed cameras, is that there is no actual enforcement, no instant notification that you have been caught exceeding the limit unlike a tug from the old bill.

Good point! There's no contraflow yet, but the 3rd lanes are coned off in both directions with traffic using hard shoulders, speed limit now 40, not a workman to be seen!

The camera before Clevedon Jnct North bound is now there.
Looks like a real nasty one, they've half hidden it in the trees along way inside the hard shoulder. It's atleast a mile before the roadworks will start too but still 40.
This one's gonna rake in as much as the other five together!

If anyone is coming from South to North along here, keep a close look on the speed limits. Im 99% it starts @ 40mph then goes to 50mph, and I can see the headlines now "Speed limit blunder means 1000's let off" cos its meant to be 40mph all the way through and some eeeeejut set it up.

I remember something like that being challenged, but I don’t think anything came of it.
Think about it like this: I go past an M25 cam which gets me at 85 just after midnight – this does not give me licence to go around the entire orbital at 150mph all day!
(I wish it did )

I remember a report of a woman who was done four times by the same camera in one day, but I couldn’t find a link – so here’s another:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/so

An offender getting 11 or 12 points (2 year ban ) for such a combo is at the discretion of the courts.

Bear in mind guys, this is Avon and somerset. They will rape any motorist that has the temerity to enter their county.
Didn't one of the cameras that was sited on the downhill section of Hallam banks nearly pay for the bridge to be widened?
As an aside, it occurs to me that the more militant elements that burn these things, can now simply hang the tyre over them as they are smaller?
I'm going past that way tomorrow, I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Yeah, they're still covered in plastic tonight. Still no visible work happening.

What do you guys think of the narrow lanes on the South bound carriageway?
I've never seen lanes as narrow as that before. I think normal lanes are 12ft, these must be about 8 or 9ft.
I don't have a problem with them, but any nervous drivers could panic when they get sandwiched between a lorry and large van with only inches to spare on each side.
I think we'll be seeing quite a few accidents here.

Some are uncovered now, but I'm not sure if they're live or not, as there's no lines on the road for some of them. Also, I think there's another one appeared on the southbound side during the split section. Didn't see a scamera last night, as there was so many lorries, but did see the lines on the road.

Those lanes are indeed very narrow! The lorries only just fit with inches spare. It won't take much of a wind to push one into another lane and cause a pile up. Especially in the evening rush hour when it's VERY busy.
