96 in a 70 zone
Discussion
Just received my New Year present from our friends in the safety camera partnership. Been caught doing 96 on the A48 by Cross Hands, South Wales (Foelgastell to be precise). A couple of questions:
1. Do mobile camera units have to be equally as visible as fixed cameras? (Don't remember seeing anything parked on the side of the road or on a bridge)
2. This is my first offence, how many points and how large will the fine be?
Thanks
Jezza.

ACPO guidelines suggest units operating mobile speed enforcement should be visible...but these are just guidelines...so the answer is no

Well did they offer you an option to pay £60.00 i.e. a conditional fixed penalty offer? If not you could be facing a court appearance and punishment at the discretion of the magistrates. I would not wish to guess but if it were to be 3 points and a fine of less than £200 + costs, you will have been very, very lucky. Worst case scenario is a short disqualification, fine and points..
If you post details of the documentation you've received I may be able to help further.

Thanks for the feedback. All I've received is a request for the details of the driver, nothing offering a conditional fixed penalty so I guess I'm looking at a court appearance.
Looking at the recent thread started dazren that South Wales Police are not the only force that are a bit covert in how they catch people.
Cheers

Geodesy didn't register any fixed sites on that stretch of the A48, but if you look on the Dyfed-Powys police website they list the places on the A48 where they put a mobile camera unit (might have helped I'd looked on there before trying to get from Carmarthen to Swansea in a hurry).

Thanks for the info - the link is here if anybody else needs it.
Wish I'd known about this earlier in the week, as I used the A48 to make up a lot of lost time after this incident!
Jezzal,
There always along that stretch, I go to Tenby quite a bit and always see a camera van on the A48 at some point.
Anywhere between Cardiff and West Wales is a no go area as far as excess speed goes, it seems all South Wales Forces are pretty keen to get their "Safety Camera Vans" LOL, out on the road at all times.
I think your looking at three points and a fine though.Fingers crossed!

Good piont, I've passed a few with my S5 and it has never gone off and I'm pretty sure they are LTI 20/20's that are used.
I had assumed they just hadn't been swithced on, which may be the case , but three times seems a bit too often.
I'll be interested to hear if anyone else has picke them up on an S5.
Grew up just outside Carmarthen as a kid, and spent a week on work experience with the local plod - used to sit at the bottom of Nant-y-Caws hill and Vascar people coming down into town, but the position was really well known, and most of the time the traffic guys let it go with a talking to. No such thing as quotas etc in those days eh....

SNAP! My (ex)girlfrind got done on the A449 in south Wales for 97mph. She got the NIP though before Xmas and received a conditional offer of £60 and 3 points this morning, no summons.
So Jezza you should get the same for 96mph.

Dangerous to try it and risky - but it's your licence if you wish to follow this advice. It's easy for others to offer such guidance as it's not their problem if it all goes pear shaped.

Seems to me its just a feeding frenzy free for all.
Ill bet they have a sweepstake running between em for who can rip off the most motorists.
Parasites. Hope they get hit by a 38 tonner.

chill, 999. He's only pointing out that camera vans are 99% likely to be placed in such a position that has NO relevance to road safety. And as such, the operatives, and those who told them to "lurk" in such places deserve whatever they get.
I'm sure deltaf wasn't having a dig at Officers who do a decent job. Please don't get too sensitive about it, your opinions are valuable.
