Police in rural Hampshire have warned motorists that their fluttering flags are frightening the horses.

"...I do have concerns that motorists may cause an animal to bolt and possibly cause injury to itself, its rider or innocent passers-by," said Police Constable Derek Grist.

... Grist, the local force's Equine Liaison Officer, cautioned drivers that they could face assault charges if their flag flew off and struck a pedestrian or a cyclist and hurt them.

Not really TBH.

our horses hate them, and I'm pretty sure most of our friends would say the same.

the noise (and appearence) of a car with these fluttering and 'buzzing'

frightens the animals, and thats not good for either the driver or rider

Fireworks/crisp packets/newspapers & Milk lorries painted like fresians,
are all included BTW

Keep the horses off the roads then, thanks for flagging this up.

I think horses were there before roads but time marches on eh! There are bridle ways, fields, etc more suitable for their equine activities.
I hope you agree Horses don't mix that well with any modern transport on our overcrowded roads, picture a HGV driving along country lane at reasonable speed say 30 mph and taking corner with horse plodding along at 3-4mph, result RTA,& HGV driver possibly fined for driving without due care etc etc. while actually the horse rider contributed to the accident in the first place... I suggest get them into horseboxes and delivered to the point of use eg off the fecking roads!
yours non-horseriding PH!

You should always be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear, so a horse travelling at 3-4mph should be no problem, if you are driving safely.

Personally I'd say that any car being driven responsibly would not have flags fluttering excessively. Any horse that can't cope with what noise and fluttering there is (or crisp packets, newspapers, etc.) without becoming a danger on the roads shouldn't be there in the first place.

As for the comment in the article about flags flying off and hitting people.

Mind you, I'd never want to put flags on my car anyway.

Oops! I seem to remember driving through York with a 5m flag pole last year too.

I love to see horses on the roads, (probably something to do with the girls that tend to be riding them), but....

Why do they pick the most dangerous roads to ride them on? I see them regularly on local roads I wouldn't willingly walk along or ride a bike on.

Ist funny how the little flag und a little red rose in button hole seem not to appear on St George's Day or any event which celebrate the essence of being English

Yet football? Und every other car sports two flags ... und it strike me how easy to steal car with way some of these fixed to rear wind-up windows too...

Ja... they distract the horse. This ist a fine intelligent animal und they can spook quite easily - even if you drive past at slowest speed und they not expecting it. (They do not like cyclists... especially mountain bikers at speed as my big sister found out once when her fine stallion was startled big time by these idiots..She ist OK with her horses too .. can do side saddle und American style riding which latter style she say give better control of the horse.)

They do flutter so.. und now Tesco who banned their drivers from flying them have now grudgingly allowed it as all their staff kept mithering und protesting.

But they look silly on a car or van or lorry anyway. Especially on a GERMAN or FRENCH or ITALIAN made car

Where I cycle in the country, I pass lots of horses, from a distance I ding my bell to get the attention of the rider, then pull right over to the other side of the road, and pass VERY SLOWLY have a quick chat with the rider, and cycle on.

Cyclist should know this, but you have to allow for the irriots in our society. They probably drive their cars the same.

Stable>Roads>Bridleway>Gallop about for an hour.

Bridleway>Road>Stables

there does that help at all.

If a car or a truck driver, is using a road, at such a speed, he
can't react to,

its them , that shoulden't be there
