So you went past a camera you knew in excess of the limit, and your surprised it went off?

I have a radar/detector and a gps device but they are only ever backup to using my eyes and slowing down when necessary - i'd never dream of relying on one to tell me whether a camera is active or not!

Yes, I am 'surprised' it went off... that's what radar detectors do, tell you if they are on or not - hence why this is 'weird' that is didnt go off.

No points in 12 years is evidence enough on my calculation of speeding, so maybe lecture elsewhere (a Renault form perhaps)

That's a patronising way to speak to someone who's visiting our forum!
As I've already said why didn't you post this on the correct forum to start with?

Visit the forum all you like, just please post the smart arse comments else where thanks.
Ive had it up to my neck with know it all's chipping in there 2 pence worth.
If I wanted "im more sensible than you comments" then I would of posted this on a speed kills forum. Try the Lotus BBS if you want to see what hostile is really like.

Was it one of the new breed of cameras that detect speed from sensors in the road rather than radar. Your detector won't warn you of these. Near where I live they are almost all converted to inductive sensors.

Where's the 'popcorn' smiley gone when you need it.

So far, we've had chap drive through speed camera above the limit and moan about it flashing, then someone else asks the blindingly obvious and gets flamed by the OP, who's clearly too angry to take this on the chin like he should.

It can only get funnier...

Some cameras don't use radar or similar to detect your speed, instead they use sensors in the road surface. Truvelo being the most popular one. There's one near where I live and you can see where the sensors are placed on the road (look a bit like those marks where they lay traffic light sensors).

Valentine1 won't detect those. Time to upgrade to a Tomtom or similar GPS-based device with updates. Much better to know where every hiding spot is and slow down if you think its a real trap.

There's no moaning about the 3 points, if... I get them. Really couldn't give a monkeys, insurance goes up £100... hardly going to break the bank.
Im more curious about this mysterious camera... and definably less worried about the high and mighty blessing us with there wisdom and knowledge of cautious driving.

Looks as though I have been caught out... GPS it is - I'll get one installed at the weekend. S*ods law it is, I spend 99% of my time under the limit and the one time I trust in my technology on a rare open road I get snapped. Hey ho.. I know for next time.

Nothing mysterious. Truvelo's have been around for years and there've been the odd other type from place to place for a while now. Still not sure why you didn't slow down 'just in case'.

Starting to ask myself the same question. Thing is, as I said ive been successful putting trust in the V1 for years and it has never let me down - until now by the looks of it.
At least I know for the future and thank God I wasn't doing silly speeds.

Why oh why would anyone rely on such a device over your own senses ? Bizarre.

Hope you don't have a satnav system as I dread to think what would happen if you trusted that as much.

I assume because some of the Truvelos are hidden in such a way that by the time you spot them you would be nicked. I assume that is the idea of the unit in the first place, to get you before you get a chance to slow down... Cash collector.

A little touchy about getting flashed then are we?

I genuinely didn't mean to come across as having a holier than thou attitude so I'm sorry if you took it that way, however I just can't see why anyone would risk speeding past a camera they knew because a box on the dash said didn't say it was live!

As has been posted above, a GPS device may give better warning of all types of cameras and mobile sites rather than just those that use radar. The speedtraps site mentioned above is also a great read and possibly the best way to "know the enemy" so to speak.

PS. Thanks for the tip about the Renault forum, I'll remember not to darken the sacred threads of the TVR forums again until I'm worthy of acceptance...

No they don't. They detect radio emissions. That alone does not tell you if a speed camera is on or off. Unfortunately for you, the flash might. The NoiP certainly will.

Not exactly smartarse I'd have said. A camera detector is there in order to detect cameras and let you slow down. You saw the camera, the detector didn't but yet you didn't slow? A bit of a strange thing to do...

Also, as has been noted, know your enemy. Traditional RADAR based cameras are on the way out and sensor-triggered ones are spreading fast. The cynic in me notes that is probably precisely because radar detectors usually work so well...

Just been up and down the A1 to Grantham and back -interestingly my detector didn't go off once.I was planning to check it in for repair when approaching London it became active again.
