Thought you may be intrested in this snippit in my local rag and falls in line what self and FiF believe as to the future of HATO. We could be right.
"
Proposals for merged police 'super force' to patrol roads

A COMBINED "super force" of traffic police officers could be set up to patrol a county's roads.
It would see road policing units from four forces in Yorkshire and Humberside merge to patrol major roads and motorways from possibly as soon as next April.
The idea for a single traffic team, made up of police officers and wearing its own distinctive uniform, is said to be that of South Yorkshire Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes, the Association of Chief Police Officers' spokesman on road traffic issues.
He said it would result in better quality road policing, consistently trained officers and motorists being treated the same, whichever force area they were in.
Earlier this month, a survey revealed that some forces across the country had many more speed cameras than they did traffic patrol cars."

Bearing in mind a PC has authority in anothers County and can process offences through CPS/Court of the other County, plus there have been a number of schemes though mutual cooperation of patrolling others roads, pray what is the point of all this...........unless super HATO's are created?. UUmmmmmmmmm its own distinct uniform.........??????

dvd
- who in the late 60's patrolled A1(M) as N Riding/ Durham combined police wearing same blue/black uniform. We had 2.8 Jags - Durham Landrovers. Ahead of our time what.

scratchchinIt sounds like they will be Bi(not necessarily)B rather than HATOs though. Like CHiPshehe

It does seem a bit backward to go out of your way to disband your trafpol unit only to have to reform it... But hardly surprising with this government.

reinventing the wheel at the publics expense? tiresome but predictable and doesnt really solve the problem either - that would cost money....

Ah, they will do this, claim to have a new super duper crime fighting force, stop accepting or re-classify many offences, and hey presto, Govt tough on crime, look, new super force and reduced crimes...

So they failed to get the police forces to combine the first time, so they'll try again -- this time starting with the HATOs. Who could possibly argue against that when we have a "national road network" and we all want to "deny criminals the use of the road"?

Interesting that the HATOs will have a distinct uniform but will presumably retain the same non-distinct vehicle livery.

I have said for a long time we will end up with the US system of policing where the traffic is looked after by highway patrol on a country wide basis and local police matters are looked after by county forces. National police force (NCS) is going to become the FBI. Give it 5 to 10 years.

Just as obi-wan says, DVD and I are indeed like minded re the future of HATOs, taking what is posted at face value to me this sounds more like setting up a Northern version of Central Motorway Policing Group.

Link to > Who we are

Being cynical maybe that is what it is intended to sound like. rolleyes

If it is merely a Norfern MPG then maybe not so bad imho, CMPG works quite frankly.

Covering say M1, M62 (E of pennines), M18, M180, A1(M), M606, M621, you'd bring in W Yorks, S Yorks, Derbyshire, Humberside.

or should I add in North Yorks at expense of Derbys?

Then reading DVD's post again note major roads and motorways so its Highways Agency patch then? And as DVD says why the different uniform? Re the ability to report offences out of area, this doesn't afaik extend to dealing with matters by FP which CMPG can and do do.
hmmmm..... digging to do... feelers to feel....

when are you guys going to learn to read items properly, instead of latching onto ill-informed idea;s that some people have. Check again just what DvD quoted, in fact, I've copied it here for you.........

Earlier this month, a survey revealed that some forces across the country had many more speed cameras than they did traffic patrol cars."

Now where does it say HATO's????????

I read "TRAFFIC POLICE OFFICERS"

Could it be that the powers in charge have seen that it works south of J16 to have a central motorway police "force" instead of the 5 different forces (each doing things differently to one degree or another), (and that's only on the west side of the Pennines, north of J16, not counting Wales & Scotland)

There is no-where in that article, any mention of HATO's or the Highways Agency, just Police Officers and Police bodies.

If you read my post I think you'll find I'm mainly talking about an equivalent of CMPG which is I believe what you are referring to. That is how the article mainly reads to me too, but then again.

No mention is made of Highways Agency by name, true.

But see the following
DVD's local rag said:

patrol major roads and motorways

Highways Agency said:

Our network includes the motorways and the trunk roads (the major A roads),

Seems to be a rather good match there to my eyes.

And then we get to
DVD's local rag said:

wearing its own distinctive uniform

Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?

Consider that one of the risks discussed in the manager workshops prior to HATO introduction was brand awareness, which is why you have decided to adopt a slightly modified police brand. Ref HA/ACPO 2003 report.

So why another uniform or brand? Repeated discussion on here and elsewhere about who are thse guys is tedious at best. Why make it even more complicated? Prior to HATOs even Richard Brunstrom questioned the issue of jurisdiction arguments. Why complicate it even further?

Oh by the way the above quoted HA/ACPO report mentions in the implementation section, and I quote,
HA/ACPO report said:

"the introduction of a 'Highway Patrol'-style service"

I rest my case, m'Lud.

Is he really saying that training isn't as good in some areas, and that you will be treated differently for the same offence depending where it happens.

Visit a school and see "High Level Teaching Assistants" and "Cover Supervisors" teaching whole classes. Visit a hospital and see "Nurse Practitioners" doing diagnoses.

What do these three, PSCOs and HATOs have in common ?

(i) they are cheaper than teacher, doctors, or coppers.
(ii) they are barely trained / unqualified or both

It'll get worse ; bet you anything you like. My real big worry is if this lot are given monetary targets combined with the "Police Officer's word is enough" approach. Given how the Scamerati and Traffic Wardens behave, all hell might break loose.
