I have been advised that an average speed camera system has been installed in both northbound and southbound tunnels at Blackwall. This is an unmarked system and is using very small, almost covert cameras. My source is very reliable and 100% accurate.

Cheers for the tip-off, I use these tunnels regulary. Although during peak times even 20 mph is a bit optomistic! I thought that any camara site has to be signed, I don't recall seeing any camara signs in the tunnels themselves. Or are they to follow?

Would this be the same BS rumour being spread that claims TFL are fining people but not giving them penalty points from these new "invisible" cameras?

Whilst the OP's post is probably well intentioned, this smells like the emissions from the back end of a male cow I'm afraid.

Those that feel there are no cameras in the tunnels, just carry on blatting through! The info was given to me by someone who had to know, to avoid speeding when not on emergency calls!

Hi Kevin, I've heard another police officer mention this rumour.

I was sad enough to call TFL this morning and ask them specifically about this. The man accessed his database of cameras and told me that there are only CCTV cameras in the tunnel.

I had a blat through this afternoon actually, so 14 days should tell us what the score is beer

Covert cameras ey? So small you can't see them.

Now, just because you're paranoid and all that, but still - these will not be type approved, as if they were they'd be all over the news...so, urrmm...I'm afraid your 100%, no BS, never wrong *mate* is talking outta his bum (IMHO).

Average speed scratchchin

So sounds like slow down to 10Mph let a huge que build up behind

Then drop down to 2nd and nail it up through the gears and then come out the other end like a fecking bullet

That's what I usually do anyway, given that the Porker was measured at 114db at 4500rpm driving and I live in Greenwich, thus pass through the tunnel regularly... I think I saw 125 leptons once on Saturday morning going southbound...

i know that there are average speed cams gone up near Bluewater on the A2, which continues from the Blackwall tunnell, but these have been here a while and are fully signed up with yellow cams and big signs. I go through the tunnels every day and i've not seen anything yet.

BTW i also hang back a bit to get a 100 meter run up, on the last straight out of the tunnel, windows down, drop it into second and floor it cloud9

If it helps, I can confirm that a V8 sounds rather good in the Blackwall tunnel too. 30mph in first is still rather loud :-)

Hopefully we can clear this up once and for all, after hearing the same rumour recently on "another forum" I spoke to a good friend of mine who is incharge of a maintenance shift in the tunnel, the FACTS are that yes a new camera system has been installed which acts in a similar way to SPECS but importantly is not specs, it reads the rear number plates (and has been tested with motorbikes) close to the entry and exit points of each tunnel, it can be linked to the ANPR system and may well be used in the future for that purpose, it completed it's final sign off tests within the last couple of weeks and is now live. However it is not type approved (yet) for speed monitoring even though it does it very well and accurately and as such nothing that it records can or will be used for any prosecutions for speeding (again yet), it is intended as a monitoring system to monitor traffic flow and average speeds in the same way that TM does, it then gives the control room more information about how effective things like "tidal flow" are. He also added that he only gave it a few weeks tops before it packed up as the rats will have eaten it and nothing in the tunnel bloody works anyway.

thanks for that Mel.
As i used the tunnel every day, espically in the mornings when i quiet, it would be a PITA if they put specs in there

I know I had the V8 Chim a while back too and used this in the BW tunnel to commute. Not every day though as i found out one week as it cost me £80 in petrol wasn't too happy with that.

It appears I owe Kevin an apology. I've done a bit of digging. Can't say anymore than that. Be safe in the tunnel and don't exceed the limits...
