Can't quite believe it but I have just received a 60quid fine for being in a bus lane!!!

Was in Bath on a Saturday morning a couple of weeks ago, I had actually just collected my M3 CSL from the BMW dealer there after having some warranty work completed. I must have strayed into a bus lane without realising - it certainly wasn't intentional and I have no recollection of it. Got home today and there is a Penalty Charge Notice complete with pic of my car stating the above. The pic doesn't show that I was in a bus lane, it's just a pic of the front of the car.

Anyone had any experience of this? Is there a way out of it? My only defence is that it's the first time I've driven through Bath in a few years, I don't know the area. Oh, and I didn't even notice that at any point I was in a bus lane!!!

Any feedback appreciated.

Yep, that's the first thing I thought of, but the time on the photo is approx 10am on Saturday morning - just about the time I was driving home.

Yes, it formed part of the penalty notice. Small and not very good quality but enough to make out the registration of the car. No detail of the driver.

Sorry, not what you want to hear but people driving in bus lanes during restricted hours really get on my censored, happens every day driving to work in the morning, everybody else in the correct lane and some selfish bugger thinks sod everyone else I'll just breeze right through....bus lanes are there for a reason.......rage

Usually though the police are waiting for them to hand out a fpn.......cop....Good.

Regarding your case assuming the signage was clear and correct, obviously you were not taking enough notice of the surroundings, even in a strange town.......

I made the same mistake in Oldham several years ago but accepted my punishment as I only had myself to blame........

What is the reason for bus lanes?

Th OP stated he was unaware of the bus lane infringement. Perhaps there has been a mistake or the road was poorly laid out. I know Edinburgh is a nightmare for bus lanes as so often you are following signs and directions and then have to cross 3 lanes in 30m to avoid being in a bus/taxi lane.

I hate them and I hate the way they are usually laid out.

Bus lanes are obviously there for use during peak hours to enable a bus (possibly carrying twenty/thirty people) to make swift progress and to encourage people to use a bus rather than a car in an urban enviroment....

I personally have only been on a bus maybe three or four times in forty odd years but I still support the principle of bus lanes....

I did qualify my posting by saying it was important that the restrictions were clearly displayed for all to see.......

It's not really the 60 quid that I'm worried about, I'm more a little pissed at receiving a penalty notice for something I hadn't even realised I had done. It was quite a busy Saturday morning and I admit to not knowing the area very well. I certainly wasn't trying to sneak up the inside of someone in a bus lane.

I was kind of hoping that someone may know the area, Argyle Street in Bath, so that I could get some details of the road layout and if it was a simple mistake to make - or if it was totally my fault and I just wasn't concentrating, I was a little lost at one point!!

I posted this on the South Wales and South West Forum's originally.

Glasgow bus lanes are 24/7. They have thoroughly soured my view.

Maybe you should start another thread, I really don't want this turning into a rant about the inconsiderate drivers you encounter on your way to work.

Is it a council penatly notice?

My mum got one a while back - on her way home from work there is a short stretch that has a bus lane marked. It is in the run up to a cross roads with traffic lights, where there are three lanes. It is often busy there, and when traffic queues to turn right, it prevents people going straight on. She got a ticket for driving around a car in the right hand lane that was slightly blocking the middle one, meaning that two wheels went into the bus lane for about 3 seconds before moving back fully into her own lane. This massive infringement obviously warrants a £100 fine, or £50 if you pay up without arguing within 2 weeks. They have a CCTV camera trained permanently on this section, and obviously expect you to hold up the traffic for no good reason rather than cross partially into the bus lane and keep the traffic flowing. Yep, appears to be, it's headed 'Bath & North East Somerset'.

Thanks for the reply, does make me feel a little better if it's the same spot smile

Why on earth are they 24/7 ??? Even if buses operated 24/7 in Glasgow (which I don't know), the traffic volume at night o'clock surely doesn't necessitate it.

The location says Argyle Road, I'll take a look at a map in the morning.
