Just spotted a new camera on the A21 south b4 Tonbridge on a 70mph dual carriageway, Why?.
Or maybe their planing to lower the speed limit?.

The write up in the local rag says its because of accident record, but the same article admits the last accident there was a year ago (non-fatal). Seems like another revenue earner. At least as its a Truvelo I don't have to worry when I'm on the bike.

Depends whereabouts on that road it is! The A21 does have an appalling safety record although I think much of it is do with bad design.

The A21 is dual carriageway from the M25 until just south of Tonbridge, then it goes to single lane up the hill. However at the same point there was a slip road on, which effectively meant 3 lames merging into 1, and this caused regular accidents, some fatal, some just bent metal, but whatever type it usually meant long delays.

Further down there is also the dual carriageway section upto Flimwell/Hurst Green, and another regular accident area.

Mind you not sure if speed is the real problem in eith location, or whether it is just idiots not paying attention.

Anyone know exactly where the camera is?

It's just around the left bend b4 the A26 exit, 1 exit before the road merges.

Hmmmm well not seen an accident at that point, would suggest it should be at the top of the hill at the earliest, about a mile about up the road. Ideally it would be at the last exit. Well thats where it would be if they were serious about safety!

Hmm - I work in Tonbridge so will have a look next time I head North. Not ever seen an accident along there, and if it's where I think it is, that's right after the long open section where everyone does 80+.

The sliproad after has partly been improved by bringing traffic down to one lane well before it, that's my usual route home and it is much safer joining now.

The bigger problem is after the Pembury bypass where it goes back to single carriageway again after the bypass (and gets quite twisty in places with poor-visibility junctions). I'm sure they'll have used the figures for that section to justify the revenue camera on the dual carriageway bit. Think some letter-writing is in order...

Thinking of which, it has one of the scariest local junctions just up from there - turning into the village at that point means coming to a stop, then crossing two lanes of 70+mph oncoming traffic. There was a _really_ nasty accident there a couple of years ago when an OAP turned up the opposite carriageway and went head-on into an oncoming car in the fast lane. All it would take is a short access road to the roundabout some 400m away.

Agree with what you say, or they will have used the accident figures from the next junction, before they made the changes.

Of course its ironic that a new dual-carriageway up and over Castke Hill there was one of the first projects canned by Labour when they came in. Shows how keen on safety they are!
