Heading towards Ravenhead, just on the measured mile marker there's a low level box (about three feet high)on the near side. As you drive past it flashes twice. When I first noticed the flash I thought that my headlights had just reflected off something in the verge. So, tonight I drove past at 40 mph (speed limit is NSL, at least I hope so) and sure enough there was flash flash.

Any ideas what it might be?

I've just been up to have a look. The box in question is a traffic monitoring device from GOLDEN RIVER traffic management.
According to their website it ia a GR100 roadside cabinet.
http://www.goldenriver.com/catalog_product.aspx?pr...
I can't see any flash apparatus on it. There is a small rectangular panel on it's side which could be a radar detector or similar, looking across the carraigeway. There are no loops in the road.
It does have a large solar panel covering the whole top of the cabinet. From drivers eyeline height it neatly reflects the sky. It could not reflect the sun, however, as the sun never goes behind it as viewed from the road.
The website says it could be configured to record vehicle numbers and even vehicle types but it says nothing regarding speed monitoring. They are typically used by councils or highways management.
I wouldn't worry too much if I was you. Whilst I was there several vehicles passed by at illegal speeds and I didn't see any flashes.
Are you sure you saw a flash? Or was it some other roadside box? This one is around 500 metres from the Derby road lights. These lights are controlled by a SIEMENS control box so I don't think the box is to do with early detection for the lights.
Speaking personally, I have never seen any mobile Scameras on this stretch.

Hope this helps, Geoff.

Nice one Geoff. Deffo flashes (else I probably wouldn't have noticed it).

I've also just noticed one on the new A617, just before Rainworth.

D'ya reckon the ones on B6020 & A617 have two forward facing apertures? (not been up so close in day light)

Strangely enough, the B6020 faces oncoming on nearside, and A617 faces moving away, also on nearside.
