Just seen on yahoo neews:-

British youths who tried to snatch a grandmother's purse got the fright of their lives when she turned out to be a former cross-country champion and chased after them.

"Without thinking I jumped up and ran after them as fast as I could. I was screaming at them too. I felt outraged."

She followed them to the grounds of a nearby hotel and caught one of them by the collar.

"He was so afraid he dropped my bag but then managed to wriggle free," said Lane, who was a junior athlete for her county in the 1950s.

Police said they were investigating the incident but recommended members of the public do not follow Lane's example.

Usual response I suspect, so we just let all these low life get away with day in, day out. If she had let them go and reported it, what would have happened, almost certainly ZILTCH. Well done that woman. We need more like her.

No doubt if she had clouted him with her bag, SHE would have been arrested for assult!

That's it, she'll be done for assault now. It's illegal to stand up for your rights in this country.

Just read that, absolutely shocking, they should have put the boys mum away for not looking after her "little" boy.

And why name and shame them, instead of all this pc crap of "Can't name names for legal reasons", what bloody reasons, they were very eager to name the man involved wern't they.

Before PH dogpile on the BiB begins, just think for a second... With all the stabbings and gun crime this year; would you recommend people chase after youths who just stole your bag?

If they steal your bag, what's to say they won't floor/stab/shoot you if you give chase?

Yes well done that woman by all means, but the police're just looking out for the public's best interests. They're advising you not to; if you personally want to give chase to possibly armed youths, go ahead.

Besides, if the line said they were encouraging others to follow her example we'd have people here groaning on about doing the Police's job for them.

That's the most annoying bit of the whole thing for me. Why the hell can't we defend ourselves against thugs? If someone is prepared to steal an old ladies bag they should be prepared to accept a severe kicking if caught.

To a point, it's time to stand up and retailate, otherwise these kids will continue to roam the streets terrorising members of the public at will. Its well time they were taught a lesson, and we need the backing of our criminal justice system to back up jo public, not banging them up because they dared to put a hand on a shoulder of a would be mugger......

And with it goes society and community.

Crime hasn't risen because the police don't do anything to stop it, crime has risen because WE don't do anything to stop it.

The police have GOT to realise that when they send out a message like that to the public, they also send out a signal to the scum.......
"Carry on mugging. After all WE are unlikely to be around to apprehend you in the act and we'll even help rein in the natural urges of your victims and bystanders, just in case, with a bit of propaganda.....though theres less chance of anyone getting involved now that the media have planted the notion that every bag-head is carrying a 4 foot samurai sword.....
I mean what have you got to lose if you do get caught ? Prison is highly unlikely and your means-test will show you couldn't possibly pay a large fine....
You never know the silly fker might even clump you one then you'll really hit the jackpot, ably assisted by some low-life solicitor all at the expense of the taxpayer."

What about an alternative message along the lines of.....
" If you feel you are capable and it appears safe to do so, in the absence of a police officer please feel free to make a citizens arrest using whatever means necessary, you may even find yourself in line for a cash reward"

All in my very, very humble opinion of course.

The thing is, it's automatic to retaliate isn't it? If someone nicked my stuff, I'd whack them. I agree that this isn't the most reasoned or sophisticated response, but it's what you do.

The danger with retaliation (which is the Police point) is that a big chap like me could be easily killed by some little scrote with a knife.

Agreed. The present message is making the public afraid. We need a message to make the criminals afraid.

However, if you're a mugger and you think no one will stand up to you then chances are you may not feel the need to carry a blade. If you're a mugger and you think someone will stand up to you then chances are you may feel that you do need to carry a blade.

In the event of a confrontation it is likely that the criminal will raise the stakes higher and faster than the hero. (i.e. mugger has no qualms about stabbing the hero, the reverse is not true).

I don't know what the answer is, but I'm not sure if encouraging more hero's won't encourage more crims to become armed with a weapon.

Surely they are recommending not following her example because you might get hurt if they pull a knife or run round the corner to a group of their mates.

Maybe soon they'll be advising us to immediately run in the OPPOSITE direction, go straight home, close the curtains and ring 999 in order to generate the delivery of a 'Victims of Crime' leaflet and a 'Unique Crime Reference Number'....?
Additionally members of the public will be advised not to shout as the criminal makes off as this may serve to make him angry leading to possible retaliation. Victims are forbidden from using swear words or racist language at this time as this will result in an instant arrest for public order offences.

As with all things, the Police and the Criminal Justice System are two entirely different bodies. The slack sentences are the blame of the CJS, not the police. I'm sure the Police are just as fed up of playing cat and mouse with repeat offenders as we are reading about these piss poor sentences, and 'prison watchdogs' calling for even slacker sentencing due to overcrowding.

So we sit down and do nothing at all, what if a scroat was outside your house jumping all over your P & J, I suppose we should shut the curtains, and call the police, who are probally chasing motorists, or too busy on other mundane things, no most of us would go out and confront him/her, sod the conseqences, of course if there were a bunch of them, then re think, but you have to do what you deem appropriate. If if the truth is known, "Do nothing" because if you hurt them, you may be locked up and prosecuted, get a criminal record, whilst the little darlings gets a free visit to Spain to eradicate the traumas of that nasty man punching me in the face when only I done was to jump on his car for christ sake.

Sorry, but this is my concept of Britain as I know it.

1) The Police weren't there, so of course the scrotes got away.
2) The crime is being investigated.

So the two main points in the title of the thread are both false. confused

I'll let you get back to your Daily Mail. Maybe you'll go down the pub later and hold court there too.

Some cops in parts of Spain take a more direct approach which some of our BiB may wish to consider.....

A short drive into the mountains, a short sharp justice lesson followed by a long walk/hobble home for the scumbag.

These cops can go home secure in the knowledge that today justice was served and they and thier families can sleep a little easier. Its what they joined up for. To make a difference.

You would then get pages and pages on here from people moaning like fk-bags about police brutality. Everytime somebody got a beating, they would trot out some reason as to why theirs was a special case that the police should have used their discretion on. You can't win on here
