someone stole my front numberplate - should i report it?

Someone has snapped off my front plate leaving the broken corners. The remains of the plate are nowhere to be seen.

Why would someone do this? Is it to clone the car? Should I report it to the police?

I think I will wire the replacement to the mains supply.

I had this happen to me once. I called the plod and they asked where the car was when it happened, I told them it was at the supermarket, then they asked where the car was now so I told them outside my house.

After 10 minutes of crap on the phone asking how I got the car home as it was an offence to drive without plates rather than wanting to know if I had seen anyone I felt like telling them to get stuffed.

Glad I didn't though as the reg turned up in a number of drive offs.

I work for them, same thing happened to me at a work christmas do. After reporting it at 10pm at night, drove home with their clearance. Shame you spoke to such a jobsworth, common sense should prevail.

Yep report it. Covers you should the plate be used in crime.

Happened to me a couple of years back, reported to the police that someone had nicked them, presumably to be put on a similar car, same make, colour etc. I doubt it was for a getaway car though as it was a 1.2 Corsa

The system seemed to work well, a couple of days after putting new plates on I was pulled over as the reg came up on their computer, so I assume they got the bastid eventually

That doesn't mean you can't do it though

I believe it carries a lesser punishment than the offence of doing 80 on a motorway, such is the state of common senseless law.

Just to follow up, local police told me that this is very common- 4 or 5 a day- and the primary reason is for drive offs at petrol stations. Best to report it!
