Rally Fans Targeted
Safety Camera Partnership on the offensive in Wales
The Association of British Drivers has condemned an announcement by the Mid & South Wales Safety Camera Partnership that they intend to target drivers attending the Wales Rally GB over the weekend of 6th-9th November.
Last year over 2300 drivers were caught by cameras deliberately set up between rally stages, and on bridges over the M4 motorway. Those caught included rally drivers Colin McRae, Richard Burns, Tommi Makinen, Carlos Sainz and Markko Martin.
ABD Road Safety spokesman Mark McArthur-Christie said: "Speed Cameras are supposed to be deployed at accident blackspots, yet during last year's rally there were no serious accidents. There is absolutely no justification for targeting people attending a sporting event. The only possible motive behind this victimisation is financial. Most of those attending the rally will be from outside the area, or even from abroad, and won't know where the speed camera vans hide out ."
Ironically, the rally is sponsored by the Welsh Development Agency, and backed by the Welsh Assembly, in a clear attempt to encourage people to visit Wales, and generate up to £50million for the local economy. There won't be many people returning though if this is how they're treated!
ABD Chairman Brian Gregory said: "We would urge people attending the rally to exercise great caution on the roads. They should be in no doubt whatsoever that the Talivans will know all the best spots in which to lurk to catch drivers out, and intend to rake in as much money as possible ."

Perhaps the organisers should think about hosting this high speed event elsewhere - maybe the lake district etc. Take the huge amount of revenue generated by the event away from Wales and with it the speeding revenue.
Bunch of complete ***kers. Annoyed!

Best advice here is to stay out of the hell-hole formally known a s "wales".
Agree. Gwent Const. tried to stitch me up with 3 offences, two of which, by their own admission, were completely made up by Gwent.
I used to go on biking holidays to Wales.
As a result of Gwent Const. now I go to Europe. I have a better holiday and don't have the danger of losing my license and my career.
The only loser is the Welsh economy. (To the tune of 3 grand this year alone.)
...and before someone jumps down my throat for expressing this view they should look elsewhere on the site where words like 'scum' are used (rightly?) without sensure.
Went last year, had a great time, got to all the stages in very good time and returned with a clean licence

(I know that I'm really tempting fate now, and I'll return from this year's Rally GB with a load of points and back to PH to eat humble pie LOL

Dear Sir/Madam,
I feel it necessary to bring to your attention the great harm being done to your industry by the fanatical and relentless persecution of the motorist in Wales. The latest revelation that Brunstrom and his polce force will be targeting innocent rally spectators is disgusting and immoral. I for one will no longer be taking my family to Wales for my hloidays, I suggest you get your house in order and campaign for the removal of Brunstom before the damage to Welsh tourism becomes permanent.
Maybe they have brought it on themselves?
Cynical in me says its for the money though

I hope you also sent it to the Welsh Assembly as the cnuts in Gwent are apparently also a bit OTT!!!!
I for one will NOT be holidaying in Wales due to the persecution of the motorist. I also have german friends who want(ed) to go there, that was until I told them of the totally undemocratic use of Gatsos and all their ilk....... another few thousand Euros NOT in Tourism in Wales..........
I've been to plenty motorsport events all round the counrty and am fed up of tw*ts in powerful (and sometimes not so powerful) cars going at rediculous speeds and driving very dangerously. You are supposed to go to these events to watch, not take part.
You think it will damage the tourism? Think about all the families attending - how do you think they like crossing raods with idoits doing over 100 going up an down.
If you want to drive fast, there are plenty of places to do so.
I hope they also have lots of unmarked police looking out for dangerous driving.
Iain
Is that your point?
Not In My Back Yard....is a phrase that comes to mind.
Personally i favour a 40 foot high berlin type wall between us and the likes of "dick" brainstorm et al....
I'll be working on the event and often you can be required to move spare equipment to a stage where something has failed - its a royal pain in the arse when you know you only have 20 mins to cover 15 miles and then have all the hassle of battling through the crowds just to get a replacement in place so the stage can run.
After all it's not as if you've got enough on you're plate dodging the w*nkers who think they're Colin McRae without having to constantly watch out for hidden talivans persecuting you for 45 in a 40 whilst you're just trying to do your job and make the event a sucess...
