I can't belive this, if someone told me it happened tome, I wouldn't believe it.

Had a visit by two policemen tonight, apparantly I was in Boots car park in Aberdeen on the 17th January (Although as I pointed out to the policeman, my wifes diary said I had dropped her off in town that day, and I would have driven home, therefore couldn't have been in Boots car park).

A driver aledged that as he was sitting in his car, I opened my car door, and hit his wing mirror, policeman said he was pushed to see any damage, but this resulted in the driver reporting it, plus the paperwork, and two policeman spending around 30 mins at my house this evening, like 2 months later......

God help us........

I'm amazed!

Last year my missus had a roadshow event at her work. A couple of hundred kids and a coach full of computers in the car park being run from a generator.

Up screeches a couple of pikeys in a van, jump out, cut the cable, shove the generator in the van and reverse out at high speed narrowly missing two children and shunting the coach.

The whole episode was fully captured on CCTV and the police didn't even bother to turn up.

I'm all for following-up on damage to peoples cars but...... Really? What were they expecting to happen? You to say "yes that was me, here's £500 for the damage", they even said they could barely see damage.

Having had a minor crunch some years ago, in which the insurance company sorted out, it did not involve the police, so why I wonder did this driver report me to the police, albeit wasn't me?I shall be putting pen to paper to the local plod tomorrow to express my opinions, and I think the guy who reported it is telling porkies.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if the police took action around here, many a time I've seen a car parallel parking, hitting the car behind it and driving off, or some ignorant twit swinging their doors into the next car. I always note down the registration and leave a short note with contact details on the victim's car, I'd hope that anyone would do the same for me.

If it's open to the public then it generally counts as a "Public place" in the case of RTCs etc.

Oddly, that was my first thought as well. I've spoken to plod about the fellow who parked his car on mine, which shattered my front plate - response - car park mate......... I had also taken a pic of it but the DVLA weren't interested either.........

If a member of the public reports that an accident has occured and one driver has not stopped/failed to report it, then we are duty bound to investigate.

To give an example - I dealt with one where a witness had seen a 4x4 roll back when parking, cracking the number plate of the vehicle behind. I then had to spend 30mins completing the booklet, trace and visit the non-stop driver, interview them under caution, only for them to deny knowledge of the incident, but accept it may have happened, contact the other person and pay for replacement number plate.
Total price of replacement number plate: £15

Cost of police time: £50+

I have much better things to do with my time, but had it been my car damaged, i would be glad that i wasn't going to be out of pocket and therefore see the importance of doing it, however minor the damage.

Unfortunately, many police inquires are of a similar nature.
Not just about driving issues either.

Many allegations are more than trivial.

Allegations are allegations.
Under the new directive from Ms J Smith and her Policing Pledge, allegations that have victims will most definitely be followed up!
The 10 points of the policing pledge say so and all the Forces in England and Wales have signed up to it!

Much police time is completely wasted. Unfortunate but true!!

Alleging parking damage is different to alleging speeding or dangerous driving, as one causes physical, expensive damage, and the other just causes a scare to inexperienced drivers or is unprovable without evidence. I understand that many will just take down a random number plate and report them just to pay for some chipped paint, but these cases are miniscule compared to those involving genuine careless damage.

I'd personally rather have the Police chase up car park hit and runs than tailgate drivers in an attempt to bait them into filling their daily fine quota.

Thinking about it in the cold light of day, IF I was parked alongside another vehicle, my car door could hardly hit another cars mirror, unless I was parked further forward them they. Anyway I will be putting pen to paper today to the police, to air my viewes, not only about the waste of time of 2 policemen, but my view of the driver telling lies in the first place.

When I was involved in a minor RTA some years ago, it was sorted all at the roadside by a call to my insurers, no police involvement, and here is a guy who aledges my car door hit his side mirror, reports it to the police, they have to spend god knows what in time and money looking into it, I despair, I really do.

have to admit sometimes people park too close to me and my door hits their door, I could leave a note with my details, but usually a note suggesting that they park more centrally on the space and not so close to my door as I like to open the door without hitting other cars smile

got a few dents on my doors when other people have hit me, so do not feel guilty at all smile
