Not been around much this week so apologies if this has already been posted.
Been to visit the parents this evening and at least 7 new Gatsos have appeared on the M42 this week. They are in the 50mph road works section between M40 intersection J3A and J6. 3 Northbound and 4 southbound. Not sure if they are live but not yet in the RoadAngel.
They all look pretty permanent so I guess the road works are going to be around for a while. So that will be another great bit of planning. Just as they are about to open the new M6 Toll section they put another bottle neck in, I give up.
Just off to upload the RoadAngel and hopefully prevent a few folks from falling for this menace..

To be fair, cameras in motorway road works seem fair to me. The number of road workers killed is fairly high and I don't mind crawling through narrow lines to minimise the risks.

Whether the continuous roadworks should be there at all is another issue entirely.

In principle a fair point, except the first one is right on the Junction where the M40 merges in. This is not the best junction already, and you don't need anything else to concentrate on. I can see regular rear-enders as folks break hard for it...

Unfortunately, Ted, borrowing from Goebbels, 'the justifiable ones are the glue that holds the lie together'.
It is becoming increasingly obvious that this is just another gold mine for the scammers. There are many instances now of limits being left on road works where there has been no worker activity for months, nor disruption to the carriageway.

A road worker has a 1 in 1000 chance of dying at work - from the HA. Presumably that's over their careers though?!

Subscribe to Construction News plus and you'll see road workers deaths are unbelievably high (through summer there seemed to be about one every day). That said, it is rarely within properly coned off working areas.

Whilst no doubt tragic for those concerned, this seems quite believable. According to government stats, more people get killed in home accidents than get killed on the road.
Stats also suggest that 34 times as many people die from smoking each year than in road accidents in UK.

do persons killed on the road include workers however..?

If you have worked on the hard shoulder or other motorway road works, you'll understand why those limits are there!

Just seen these cameras today and likewise updated my Road Angel.

The camera on the M40 north slip road at M42 J3a is definitely the wake up call to anyone that is not aware of these cameras.

Can't comment on the M42/40 stretches directly, however the M27 has had a lot of road works for what seems like a year. In that time I don't think, certainly the stretches I've been on, they have reduced the limits once It all seems to run OK to me and I'm sure if one of the road workers was run over/killled it would make the local paper and or tele news (yes it is normally fairly quiet here ).
So perhaps it's not as common, that or the proper precautions are not being put in place when it does happen.
Either way I feel that unless a particular stretch really requires the limit to be reduced and cameras placing then it should not be used as yet another excuse to collect a bit more money.
AIMHO and not meant to offend anyone connected with this industry etc, in particular anyone that may have first hand knowledge to the contrary.

Just to stamp this right down!! this is right on the sharp 90 degree turn off from the M40 start going north!! hard over the left hand side on a very tight bend.
technically the turn/slip road is listed as a permenant 50mph anyway but you just wont see this camera at anymore than 20 feet away due to the angle of the bend.

[ Not really mate, I used to use that road a lot and I agree it should be a 50 there in the road works

The road works are not a contra flow, there is no lane narrowing, the majority of the road works have no road works on them (they are installing a series of "parking bays" ready for use of the HS at busy times). Where they are working is off the motorway and behind large concreate bollards. I can't imagine a more safe set of road works before getting to the issue of what is an appropraite speed.

The slip road is not a 50mph limit, the limit is 70mph. Check the sign again particularly the shape.

On Monday they were not live. Today the first one northbound and last one southbound eg nearest the M40/M42 were both live. Didn't go past J4 today so can't comment on them. I also notice that the ones on the M6 J2 - 3 which always has at least one live have flashed 18000, so should have just about paid for the roadworks.
