Just heard this on the BBC R2 "news":

More than 1 million people world wide will die onthe roads.

"This will make road traffic accidents the world's biggest killer. RTAs will outstrip cancer, AIDS, coronaries, etc as killer!

Aunty Mary was SPEEDY to the mark! She was in a right old hurry to get her two pennorth in!

"We are leading the world in accident reduction - but it will take 6 years to reduce it further still" (Think that is what she said - missed some of it - "family" )

Brief report blamed bikers for UK KSI rate as well!

They are doing their utmost to promote the scamera - what with the Beeb prog last night, advert campaign on prime time TV in Kent, and the leaflets in London -

looks like someone is getting rattled!

We'd better keep up the pressure!

Heard it on BBC 1s news this morning too. They're saying that at some point in the future more people will be killed on the roads than by serious disease.

They also go on to say that GB has the 4th worst record for child deaths on the roads in Western Europe. Mary Williams came on and ranted a bit as normal, good excuse for a quick bit of 'think of the children' but completely failed to make the blindingly obvious connection between teaching children that roads are dangerous and children not getting run over.

Its scary that an entire generation are being taught that roads are safe for pedestrians and its the evil driver's fault if you're hit. If nothing changes, I fear for what will happen in the future.

AFAIK the world's biggest killer is still the common mosquito, carrier of malaria and blackwater fever.

Luckily several viewers emailed in to point out the apparent correlation between increasing child road deaths and decreasing public information camapagins.

Lung Cancer alone takes 4.9 million lives annually so I think we can say that this is complete and utter knackers...

Just imagin the outcry if a 'Dirty Bomb' went off killing 3,500 people in one hit........not much is said about the ones that die each and every year on our roads.

Just to put it into some sort of perspective.

Yep, it's total horsepoo.

From the World Health Organisation (www.who.int/mediacentre/releases/2003/pr27/en/)

"In 2000, 5.3 million men and 4.7 million women developed a malignant tumour and altogether 6.2 million died from the disease"

And this is expected to increase by 50% leading up to 2020.

Should be zero given number of scameras Liebchen!

Your numbers by your own account (and our own BiBs (three of 'em!)) are dwindling. The Beeb propaganda last night did at least make that point. You do not need trafpols when you have talivan.

Well - talivan is usually parked where you cannot see it - and sits there for hours!

At least when you were in your cars driving around - you spotted more numpites!

And another reason why there was steady decline in RTAs pre-scam (per ABD and Paulie safespeed) perhaps -

We used to see decent adverts each commerical break.

We do not see any - and what few we do see are naff! (Though the "Now You See Him/Now You don't" Miirors/blind spot and the Seat belt one were OK) But they are not shown that regularly - are they?

But the virtues of PC Gatso and £87K on leaflets?

What a waste of money!

Road safety? Those Prats in so-called Road Safety Pratnerships make me

It could be argued that the cost of the road mobility that society needs is the 3,500 people that die eah year. There is no parallel here, to 3,500 people being murdered by a brainwashed wit with a dirty bomb.

Thanks to Dazren for pointing out that Wildcat beat me to it.

Hear is my two-pennorth lifted from the other thread.

The World Health Organisation claims that 1.2 million people are killed on the world’s roads each year; "the third biggest cause of preventable death after heart disease and depression."

Perhaps no-one has told them of the 2 million that die every year from malaria which could be prevented by spraying the inside wall of buildings with DDT. Of course the enviros don’t like that because they say they believe every word in Rachel Carson’s ‘Silent Spring’.

Then we have the huge numbers that die in the Third World every year from lung infections caused by living under the Asian Brown Cloud. But enviros tell us they are pleased to have prevented the building of 300 hydro-electric power stations that would help reduce dependence on burning animal dung for cooking.

Asian Brown cloud info here

www.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/asiapcf/south/08/12/asia.haze/

Pix here:

http://www-ramanathan.ucsd.edu/hazeimages.html

Given the accusations of pollution caused by our cars, how many of you had even heard of the dreaded Asian Brown Cloud??? They are even trying to re-name it to avoid upsetting the poor souls who have to live in it. Not PC you see.

No it isn't horsepoo.
The majority of those that die from smoking related illness bring that conlclusion on themselves and have the choice to stop that happening. Those that die from this sort of illness who do not smoke, can usually blame inconsiderate selfishness from those that do!

Someone killed on or near the road does not necessarily have that option unless they decide to stay at home and become a hermit!

But they all do not get put into trafpol!

Still - you may get trained to ride a push bike and roller blade to emergencies!

That way they get to save a few bob on the "lean cuisine" blokey lad cookery book!

gone Liebchen!

I was nearly killed when some chap had fatal illness at wheel of his car - and he ploughed into me at great speed!

Not turned me into a hermit - nor made me afraid of my own shadow!

Lost a cousin when an artic wiith dodgy everything hit him!

I still drive a car - extremely comptetently. Redid my driving test to make sure - even!

Lost another cousin in a plane crash - we still get on planes!

People do have a choice: they can ride their bikes in responsible fashion, use the green cross code, cross roads at safe crossings, not j-walk, and behave courteously on the road at all times!

They can also invest in proper training, buy books such as "Driving- Essential Skills" aimed at all drivers - beginners, numpties and petrolheads!

Reports such as these are pure spin! Do zero!

Unfortunately, those with limited intelligence believe them!

Why are we trying to reduce the amount of people killed in the world? Surely instant road deaths ease the strain on the overstretched NHS??
