Driver Faked Death To Avoid Fines

Couldn't have been me, i'm dead.

Some people go to extreme lengths to avoid speed fines but for one man it's led to a prison sentence.

To avoid paying £180 in fines, Shafkat Munir, 26, from Blackburn, Lancs, produced a false death certificate to the authorities after speed cameras snapped him three times.

He admitted perverting the course of justice and was jailed for 12 months, and banned from driving.

Munir was first caught speeding in January last year on the M55 in Lancashire by doing 66mph on a 50mph stretch.

Then he was snapped by a camera doing 36 mph in a 30mph zone on Preston New Road in Blackpool.

The third time was in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, when he was doing 41mph in a 30mph zone.

A man claiming to be called Rashid Hussain contacted the parking office, claiming that Munir had died in Pakistan in 2002.

A death certificate in Urdu was sent in, but inaccuracies were found.

John Davies, of Lancashire's Road Safety Partnership, said Munir's con was "almost unbelievable".

He added: "Munir's licence was clean before this spate of incidents and he would have still been able to drive - I have never known anyone go to such lengths."

you got to give it to him he was thinking outside the box hehe but if we didn't have these draconian speed limits there would be no need for such stunts.

Yep, none of the speeding offences look outrageous on the face of it.

Who knows obviously, but I know chances are it wasn't down a crowded busy dangerous road, but probably at a speed limit change or the middle of the night through roadworks with no one around etc etc...

I say good on him for giving them the run around. Just do it better next time hehe

brilliant. well done that man!

Lets hope prison turns you into a hardened criminal so on release you can start dealing drugs and robbing old folk. The police will never catch you then with all their resources tied up in translating death certificates and scamming motorists. Better luck next time.

He must have heard about the idiot woman who tried it in Iowa in the U.S. Well, not the death certificate in Urdu bit, but her efforts to prove her "death" were much more elaborate.

Her traffic offenses were minor as well, but falsifying documents, etc., is not the way to endear yourself with the Yer Honors of the world. She got an academy award, I understand, for her role as an extra in the movie, Hot Chicks in Prison.

What a numpty.
He hands in a death certificate that pre-dates the offence's
The first thing to enter the BIB's mind will be suspicion.
Someone is obviously up to something, so an investigation will result; even if it's the guy is dead and someone is using his ID.
If he had taken a plane out to India after the event then 'died' he might have got away with it. Assuming he got the document to look reasonable.

It gets better.

He pretended to be someone else, and handed in the "death certificate" and was asked to leave contact details.

When the inaccuracies came to light, the Old Bill phoned the contact number and asked "Is that Shafkat Munir speaking"

"Yes" came the reply...

Banged to Rights, and my nomination for a Darwin Award!
