Police Pimp Own Ride

Police use customised van to infiltrate cruises

On a different kind of beat...
On a different kind of beat...
Police in Wales have ‘pimped out’ one of  their speed camera vans to take to boy racer ‘cruises’.

The vehicle has been made out of the shell of an expired ‘Arrive Alive’ camera van and blinged up to make what officers call ‘the region's awesomest set of wheels.’

The idea is to infiltrate cruises and car park gatherings, and when the young drivers come over to have a look at the van - which is fitted with a pumping sound system - they are hit with information on how to stop being a nuisance.

The idea is to educate young drivers at the events on how to be more responsible behind the wheel.

Unfortunately the force’s Deputy Chief Constable Clive Wolfendale said: ‘The deuce is jam packed full of information and advice for young drivers and draws a crowd wherever it goes.

‘Having assembled the curious (and jealous) spectators we can get some serious messages across.

‘It also has the best sounds around.

'Check it out.’

I may be completely wrong here, but I didn't think the 'crusing' scene was massively into proper motorsport, so don't see why the Martini livery would appeal ....

So, they create an eyesore with a 'pumping' stereo to teach kids how not to be a nuisance. Oh my dear lord, please please please tell them about the irony of that.

Bloody brilliant idea. The police are getting their message across to them in a way they understand. Don't see what the fuss is about. These boy racer kids do it cos they are board and want entertainment, if you entertain them with a wicked Transit then they'll listen and the police can communicate their safe driving info.

Actually, most boy-racers will probably think it's slightly sad and pathetic - rather like seeing an uncle in a nightclub trying to look cool, it just doesn't work. The music they were playing was slightly cringe-worthy as well.

The only thing I think that HAS gotten people talking is truly cool stuff like the fully-liveried Exige Sussex Police have got.

absolutely cringeworthy. Speaking as serving BiB and someone who has also been into the modified "scene" though in my defence I only ever attended 2 "cruises". This can only fail and is degrading to both sides.

How on earth can the police think that they are reaching out to the youth? Schemes like this always fail becuase youth culture is ultimately about being anti establishment and therefore any intrusion from government bodies will not be tolerated or entertained by the cruisers the 'pimped' van falls way short of having anything of interest to most of the people who show up to cruises and the message will not be heard by its target audience.

meanwhile you have bobbies manning the van who could be doing other duties. I'm afraid whenever the police try to reach out to the yoof they come up with something like this. What would be better is a couple of roads policing cars at the cruise with traffic officers who just happen to be car enthusiasts. I've found that if I stop and actually take the time to speak to these people about their cars and speak to them showing some respect then I get the same back and they do actually listen.

Tricking them with a wall of subs is just patronising.

You really need to re-think your username. rolleyes

Degrading and insulting. To both sides. And it cost the taxpayer money.

Well it's a new initiative and it should be allowed to run... it could work and they have only bought one old Transit and done it up rather than a new fleet of them so it's better to try new things than just stick with things that the police obviously don't think are working. Alternatively we could all sit back and moan about people and the things that go wrong in life rather than trying different forms of action.

That Exige is great for shows and that sort of stuff. Fully liveried Mitsi Evos and Scoobs would work well too.
An old tranny van just doesn't cut it for me.

End of tax year, need something to spend money on to make it look like they've spent all the money they've received so their budget doesn't get cut, and volia - stupid Transit.
