Swiss driver trashes camera

Throws it off a cliff and is arrested

Sneaky camera
Sneaky camera
Attacking speed cameras isn't just an antipodean or even an English-speaking occupation. A Swiss driver flashed by a speed camera attacked it with a pickaxe, ran it over with his car and then threw it off a cliff.

He was doing nearly 50mph in a 30mph zone through the Swiss village of La Punt Chamues-ch in the Alps when he was flashed by the camera. He used the pick axe to smash the camera from its mountings, then drove the remains up a mountain to throw it off a cliff. Both film and camera were destroyed, but the police spotted him as he was disposing of the device -- must have been fairly conspicuous -- and arrested.

He faces a fine of up to £13,000 for destruction of public property.

We've looked at how sneaky the Swiss authorities can be on hiding the devices -- see below for link.

50mph in a 30mph zone does seam a bit too much, but as we know some 30mph zones shouldn't be, and from the picture it looks like just the case (if that's the village/camera). Good on the guy, just a shame he got caught doing it.

If it was a built up area though, then he deserves all he gets.

Next time, save time by not running it over, just launch it off the nearest cliff.

Top marks for style and originality. The pick axe shows real passion, and the cliff thing is inspired. The fact that he went back for the scamera after it flashed him shows real initiative.

Shame about the finish.

Nonetheless, I salute his courage, his indefatigability...

I hate speed cameras with a passion and always will do - but I'm a bit concerned with the level of support here for plain criminal vandalism (no matter how displeasing the target)...

Aww come on, you must be able to see the funny side of it. It must have been like that scene out of Fawlty Towers where Basil starts bashing his car with a bush!

I told before - 3 mph tolerance across range. Why you think I choose to live here? Even Steviebabes ist not that bad. Numpty und sub-marinated in his opinion (but blame this on the brain washing ) but to be fair he do do as he say in his troll thread und allow 10% (but not always plus 2 per his victims who show us NIP in pub )

Anyway - did tell you about Snow White with the scam in her boobies once. She did not get the same respect as the original as scamera in one case - no wonder bra could lift her boobies back to life

Und you think Swiss are full of Gehorsamspflicht. We are natural born rebels und when we get a bit cross - we end up

I've lived in Switzerland for 5 years and the 'radars', as they call them are getting ever more present and are a constant worry. They give you 5 or 6kmph over the limit for free and the fines start at CHF40 (less than £20) with no points but the get very steep very quickly and you are looking at a 3 month ban for getting caught doing 80kmph in a 50kmph zone (50mph in a 30mph) plus a CHF 1,000 / £400 fine.

The also prefer hidden cameras (in the back of estate cars) over fixed ones although the fixed ones are bad enough as they are always set at low level and these days the flash is an invisible infra-red. At least they show some signs of a sense of humor in that a couple of them in the Geneva area are painted like a lump of Gruyere cheese or even a balck and white cow.

Someone in my office has just got done for speeding past a new fixed camera 5 days in sucession! He's looking at a CHF 3,000 fine (well over a grand) and a 6 month ban.

At least fuels is 20% cheaper here than in the UK.

I get pissed off with UK car mags always slagging Switerland because of the silly CHF40 ($18) motorway toll fee that the slap on every car when you enter (which is valid for the year - even if you are only passing through for one journey.)

You easily recouperate that amount when you fill-up your tank!

Further to an earlier negative comment and this one, I am genuinely surprised more of the things are not destroyed. They are a physical representation of the greed of politicians and hatred of freedom by police forces.

I'm no friend of speed cameras or silly speed limits but doing 50 in a 30 limit is asking for trouble.
I don't have a gripe about other countries' motorway tolls if it means I can get to where i want without having to go through every town and village. Here we seem to get the worst of all worlds.
