Towns To Become 20mph Zones
Top speed in towns is set to be slashed to 20mph
Thousands of residential roads are to be made 20mph or less under sweeping Government plans, it has been reported.
Ministers believe this will cut road deaths by a third over the next decade.
There is expected to be variable limits outside schools and electronic signs will tell drivers to do 20mph or less at peak times.
Of course there will be an army of cameras to detect when drivers creep above the limits in some of the new 20mph towns.
It is believed that the Government has set a target to cut road deaths from 3,000 to 2,000 a year.
In addition to more 20mph zones there is likely to be a lower drink-drive limit, six penalty points for serious breaches of the speed limit and stricter penalties for not wearing a seatbelt.
Jim Fitzpatrick, the Road Safety Minister, told The Times that the Government would consider setting a target for cutting road deaths.
‘We get some criticism for not being ambitious enough,’ he said.
In 20 zones drivers will not be concentrating so much on the road, they will be concentrating on the speedo in case the needle exceeds 20 mph, which will result in fines and points no doubt, and wont be paying attention to the road.
I can happily cruise at 30 mph, guess we can all do, but to make sure you don't exceed 20, well not as easy.
Of course when they decide that lowering the limit MAKES NO DIFFERENCE to road deaths, will they increase it, will they hell, probably drop it even further.
FOR GODS SAKE, EDUCATE THE BLOODY PEDESTRIANS...............

Saw a mother yesterday shout to her young daughter to hurry up and then proceeded the cross the road leaving said child to catch up which she did by running across the road without looking, mother didn't even notice as she was looking the opposite direction.
So with so many people driving 4x4s so slowly and kids running out in front of them surely they're more likely to go under the car and get even more hurt? Hey why don't we all drive cars lined with pillows too then nobody need think!
reasonable speed limits are the right thing not carpet bombing just to make driving a miserable experience
not to mention the damage to engines and to the environment with higher pollution and more congestion

What a good idea, I could have told them to do that 20 years ago!

s, that have no real idea about road safety and think that lowering speed limits will make a scrap of difference, but hey, think of all the nice fines it will generate.
