Dealer misrepresentation - advice please
Discussion
Hi,
I recently bought a 12 month old used car from a main dealer.
During the sale process I asked if it had previously been a hire car.
The salesman stated that it had been owned by the manufacturer and used for a while at the manufacturers base office before being retailed out through the dealer.
The V5 has arrived today and shows the name of a well know hire company.
I would not have bought the car had I known it was a hire car, which is why I asked the salesman specifically "has this been a hire car?"
I'm worried that if I contact the dealer they'll just deny the verbal conversation where I asked if it was a hire car.
How do I best deal with this situation? Thanks!

Who does this? It may not even have been available at the time.
Well , I do for one - that way I can see the name of the last owner and I usually try to phone them up and have a chat about the car ( as long as they are in the phone book ; I only need to remember the surname and street name which is not too difficult ) . If not in the phone book I suppose I could pop round if local , but I've never done that .Jasandjules said:
Ok,
First things first, what do you want to happen?
This.First things first, what do you want to happen?
If it was me (and assuming I'd bought a car without seeing the V5......) I'd ring the dealer principal and tell him you're not happy, and that you were lied to, and that you would like the car replaced with an identical one which has not been bullyrammed by a different punter every day.
When working at the airports I watched the valeting guys going between the prep areas and the customer collection points. Those things were treated like absolute crap.
They were probably treated more kindly by the customers.
I certainly wouldn't want one as a second hand buy. I know a lot of the sub 10,000mile approved used come from rental places.

Why do people continue to make multi-thousand pound transactions, in an industry known for bending the truth, without putting the most important parts of the contract in writing?
Well, I can say that I have lent friends money without any contract, without anything written down, without any repayment plan, just a "pay me back when you can". Now I should know better, I DO know better, but you know what, there is no way I would ever put such a thing in writing.......And I've purchased expensive cars without a contract in writing too.........
No matter what the courts say, average people do not do such things.
As above, depends what you want from the situation.
FWIW, I fell into the exact same trap with a 12 month old 1.4TDCI Fiesta, ex Avis as I later found out. The truth is how many private punters buy a brand new car, run it for 12 months and 8k and then trade it in? Fact is many of these cars have 'corporate' users either hire or fleet.
Is 100 drivers of varying driving style better or worse then a company car user who ragged it for every mile on the clock?
In my instance, I ran the car for 3 years and it's dirty past
didn't affect it in any way other than I hoped that the private buyer didn't ask to see the V5! At that point it really is irrelivant, but that stigma remains.
In my instance, I didn't ask the salesman, had I and subsequently been lied too I would be speaking to the dealer princial and getting satisfaction in whatever form you expect.
