Average Speed Across Britain

Fears Britain is heading for blanket average speed enforcement

Will these be on every UK road?
Will these be on every UK road?
Average speed cameras could soon be rolled out nationwide leaving beleagured motorists with nowhere to hide, it is feared.

A trial of Big Brother average speed cameras that track every inch of your journey is now under way and soon the scheme could be introduced across Britain.

The system has led to accusations that the Government is looking to squeeze even more money out of motorists who are already struggling with spiralling fuel and tax costs.

There would also be a huge increase in the number of penalty points dished out to drivers.

Thirty-four cameras have apparently been installed and are being tested on a five-mile stretch of the A13 in east London from Canning Town to the Gorsebrook interchange.

There are also pilot schemes in Scotland and Nottingham, as well as the cameras being used in a residential street in Camden, north London.

If the cameras catch enough drivers they will almost certainly be introduced on virtually every road in Britain.

Captain Gatso, campaigns director for Motorists Against Detection, told PistonHeads: ‘Enough – we can’t breath with all these cameras. This Government is using a zero tolerance policy to police drivers whereas the real criminals are getting away scot-free.

'The Government and the police must remember they police by consent and that the police force needs all the help they can get with their already fragile relationship with the public.

‘This scheme will no doubt lead to a nationwide roll-out and something must be done.’

The RedFusion system works by recording a number plate at a certain spot and when the vehicle passes the next camera a computer calculates the average speed.

The system even works if a vehicle changes lanes.

An Association of British Drivers spokesman said: ‘It is not how fast you are driving but how you are driving that is important.

'The problem with these cameras is that they will penalise 24 hours a day, even at three in the morning. They are no alternative to police patrolling our roads.’

What an absolute joke!

Why on earth do people from other countries still want to come to this little island that's quickly turning into Alcatraz.

If they are seriously going to do this the lease they could do is review safe speeds on roads, 70mph is nearly 40 years old.

Modern cars are just much better at dealing with braking, loss of control and even accients.

Well we either all get fake plates...

Or simply remove them.

This is getting beyond a joke.

Do these cameras detect old style silver on black number plates - I mean for cars on which these are legal? Might affect my decision to sell an older car I have...

You do appreciate speed cameras don't really make them any money? I mean they probably turn a profit, but a very inconsequentially sized one. There is of course a solution to the cameras.

Don't break the speed limit. Is it honestly that hard? I love driving fast, but its not like average speed cameras are going to crop up on every rural A and B road. Enjoy your driving on these, and then when you're in a city centre, drive slowly.

Perhaps the speeds you'll be forced to drive at will be slower than you believe to be necessary. So what?

That stretch of the A13 around Canning Town is full of speeding cars. Ignoring the fact that it is a good, wide, modern dual carriageway which anywhere else would be National speed limit, I am often overtaken by cars which must be doing in excess of 30 mph over the limit (I know this 'cos they go faster than me). Slowing this traffic down will do little to improve safety on what is a very well designed and constructed road.

Had the pleasure of driving through Nottingham recently, multiple lanes, specs, 30 limit... Everyone doing 25 and swerving between lanes between each camera. Lovely.

I'm not really sure why we need windscreens nowadays, the only thing you look at whilst driving is your speedo. Sod the kids, cyclists and granny I didn't see they can just count themselves lucky I was doing 30 and not 35 rolleyes

How can you say they don’t make them any money? I mean sure in the first year or so the revenue gained would be going towards the cost of the unit, after that its PURE profit! How is that “not making money”.

Do you honestly believe it’s about safety?

If it was why would they use average speed camera’s in town centres when a Gatzo is good enough to snare and slow down drivers and cause congestion (which is what the want so they can charge you for that as well).

I guess you're therefore posting in favour of this measure, since the cameras can target any lane, so no swerving.

I posted in another thread about this as well: I really can't see the need to stare at your speedo the whole time. Its amazing how people on here, I guess who would all profess to be good drivers (regardless of the truth), seem incapable of maintaining a constant speed whenever a speed camera is around. Its not that hard.

I really believe that if you're staring at your speedo the whole time because your speed is kangarooing up and down you either have problems with spasms of the right foot or a serious lack of co-ordination.

Surely, when you are sat in a car, you can tell when you speed up. In order to be convicted in a 30, you have to be doing 33 (this may not be true). Thats 10% faster - if you are unable to work out that you're going a) 10% faster than anyone else or b) that your speed has increased by 10% since you last looked at your speedo, you are unfit to drive in my opinion.
