Following on from North Wales Police muzzling their police dogs in case they bit someone (a fleeing suspect perhaps?), now APCO have advised police dog handlers to consider whether criminals could be frightened of dogs before using them in raids or searches.

it's quite simple - if you break the law of the land things might happen that you dont like! - if you cant do the time......

And apparently, the suspects could be allergic to the dog so they should be careful about when they use the dogs.

this will probably upset some people

i think it's mad when nuts are banned from a flight because of one 'allergic' person - this situation isnt mad - it's fking crazy!

Similar to a comment to me from a US Air Force pilot who had only recently been posted to the UK. I'm really surprised your police don't carry guns, what do they do if they are chasing somebody? Shout, "Stop or I'll shout stop again"?

Slightly unrelated - I heard a while back that if someone broke into your house and your dog attacked them, that no charges could be brought against you as you're not obliged to control your dog on your property? Can anyone clear this up?

You must display a "beware of dog" sign at the entrances to your property or the burglar can sue you if he gets bitten(as can anybody), put a sign up and they all become a cheap meal for poochie

Who care's if they don't like being bitten by a dog, or being chased by them or if they are allergic to them!

If you don't like it, then simply don't do it in the first place!

I think if you display a sign it's seen as admitting liability ie you're aware that your dog could be dangerous. So, I'm not sure if the sign is the best thing to do.

Not sure it's a legal requirement to display a warning if you have a dog - I've heard yes and no. BUT if you don't and someone gets bitten then they can sue you, however if you have a 'Beware of the Dog' sign they would have less of a case...

I always thought that most of the dogs the police have are for effect.

Most of them don't do anything but bark and look scary, the ones that sniff stuff out are good.

But you see them being towed around by these women officers in towns, and its just ridiculous.

More the point I was getting at is, that they can't really use them. If I got bitten by one of their dogs for something trivial in the eyes of the law I would be sueing.

All GP and tactical dogs are trained to defend themselves, their handlers and to stop and detain people who run away. They do that by biting them! If the person stops prior to the dog reaching them and in effect surrender. The dog will not make contact but will maintain a guard of the suspect by cirlcling and barking at them until the handler arrives to take over.

Many people get bitten. Many sue, some are successful.
Regardless of the fact you may get a payout, being bitten is not nice. It hurts and can have very serious personal consequences if you resist the dog when its on!

As I mentioned I have grown up with them, and have been bitten by an alsation also, it was obviously put down shortly after said attack. But I was saying the way they are totted around towns when the cops come in to get drunk people its amazing they bother. The handler is there for no reason with a dog that is useless.

I interviewed a car thief , when he came back from hospital, who had had a portion of his right bicep bitten off and eaten by a police dog.
The dog made a full recovery though.
