Hi, if you wait for the right car they do come along. I travelled from East Anglia to Scotland to get my K series supersported 7, 6 speed box, LSD etc all for around your budget. plus it had a lot of lovely expensive new shiny bits on the car. Being a Roadsport A ex racer its no concourse car but a bit of TLC this winter and it should be a blinder.

Worth a thought?

I converted a 1.4k to an R300 spec (inc Tillets, R500 wheels and Exhaust, Roller barrels etc) for someone a few years ago. Cost them about 5k net of the bits they sold. (I should add they were a friend and I did it for free) but there are plenty of 1.4k Supersports out there for 8-10k. Pick a tidy one with a 6 spd box and LSD and you won't go wrong.

If you do the upgrade as I did and the car is tidy, its worth every penny of £15k.

This is the best entry point into Caterham ownership. If you get a pre-1998 kit built car, you will be emissions free at MOT as well.

errr with a £15k budget I'd be looking for a Superlight...has all the bits you'd want as standard plus a recognised resale value. If you only have £10k to spend right now, then you could indeed do worse than look at an ex racecar. If you raise your budget a little, PM me and I'll make sure you get a good one too.

I just bought (1 week ago) a 1600 8v Vauxhall Classic, just under your budget at 8k, a 1999 car with just 4k miles!

great little car, plan is to use on sunny sundays (like today) and hopefully some track days. It may not be very powerful but its huge fun to drive and is so simple mechanically it shouldnt cost a fortune to keep on the road.

from my first week of caterham ownership I`d advise jumping straight in and start enjoying!

I nearly went to see that one, it was advertised the day after i went to see the one i bought, same spec as mine (looks like ex-academy/scholarship), has had spare wheel carrier removed (neither goor nor bad but personal taste I`d say).

looks like a good motor in the pics, leather seats is a plus and its painted. My (£8k) has cloth seats (which can get wet) and polishedd ali body (needs lots of polishing), so these two bits make it worth more in my opinion.

i thought it was sold a week or so ago when someone on www.BlatChat.com was posting about getting a VX1600, mine was mentioned in the thread, and I`m sure they said they had been to see this one and bought it. But since then it has been re-listed on here, so maybe that sale fell through.

hope that helps!

Andy.

I have been following this forum with interest , i asked similar question last year and got lots of different opinions similar to this, superlight was always favourite i have been up to caterham south and found them not very helpful a test drive to them was a thrash upto a roundabout and back and i was only a passenger, the only way to get a decent test drive was to hire one for the day (sigma engine)which i did but i dont think it will be representative of what i can buy, . i now think an ex race car may be good for me but were apart from here would i find one?? but i would like to have a look at a few of my options ie crossflow vx and racecar if i can find one anything close to sussex would be nice any help or advice would be great

Try Woodcote sports cars, or Millwood (www.millwood-mc.co.uk) in Dursley, Glos although no that local, they will let you have a test drive any of their used stock.

Thanks Andy, looks like it took you some time to find the right car.
Just hope i drop on one that is right as stated it's hard to get a test drive in any of the models.

i went to see 3 in the end, first one wasnt road legal (no MOT or Tax), so was just visual inspection with engine running (an actual current racer). 2nd one the owner took me out as a passenger for a couple of miles.

the 3rd the owner took me out then let me have a go. this is the one i bought, but not due to the fact i got to drive it! having a test drive is important so you get a good feel for the car though, but people want to be sure you are serious and not just along to "have a go in a Caterham".

i was only looking for a month or so, but requirement was 8k or close, preferable ex-race. There arent that many around within that end of the scale, but a few have come up since the new year. (mine, silver one, orange one in Glos. all on Pistonheads, and green/yellow one on ebay).

keep looking and one will come along, most Caterhams are well looked after due to the nature of the people that own them.
