Newbie insurence/trackday cover
Discussion
Picking up a first time purchase from Millwoods just after the bank holiday. Had a couple of insurance quotes - from Adrian Flux and Footman James (the best so far)... Neither include trackday cover as a metter of course (FJ used to apparently) or at all for that matter.. Any thoughts on this? I assume it's no problem getting general cover from one company, then track day cover from another??? Is the latter generally on a specific day by day basis?? (although affording a track day time might be an issue right now as I'm stretching the budget a little! Another story...) Any recommendations? Any ideas to the sort of cost are we looking at for typical Seven TD cover?? ('05 Roadsport 120 £14500 approx)
I always had track day insurance. Wrote the Caterham off at Castle Combe, Got the pay out. Word of warning, insure for the actual value, I insured for 14k, but the car by the time of all the mods was worth more like 17k, obviously got 14k, less the excess.
Even though its track day insurance, still paying extra on my road insurance, because I have had an accident, it doesn't matter that it was on the track and sep insurance, according to the insurance companies, it was still insurance.
For me it was worth it

You should definitely shop around, I know that the cover we have with Competition Car Insurance (nee: Eggar Lawson) does have track day cover built in for no extra ££'s, just a different excess. Many companies will offer this as a more efficient way to give some level of track day cover, BUT you need to see if they have restrictions on WHICH track day companies. Reputable companies like Bookatrack, L7CGB, etc all seem to be covered, so were we to do a track day, we would do with them for simplicity's sake.
REIS do include track days but they quote very high for your first Caterham.
Was quoted over £500 for mine aged 42 full NCB etc. etc. Despite having performance cars in the past having sold them 7+ years ago for a family car counted against me.
Try Frank Pickles. So cheap you could probably pay extra for track cover elsewhere.
£140 FC for me.

Adrian Flux were the worst company I have ever had the misfortune to deal with, truly awful
I second that and a uncompetitive quote too. Over £700 from memory with a large excess.Edited by Agent Orange on Monday 20th May 15:17
I've insured a few cars via Osborne and Sons. Always very efficient service and they've just insured my first Caterham for £185 with £200 excess (no track days though)
PS: guitarguy remember to specify a mileage limit if you can as this keeps the cost down. By the way your car was looking fantastic parked alongside mine at lunchtime today

Thanks guys... Have talked to REIS. Looking like the favorite at the mo... £50 more than Footman James (tho' with a £250 excess rather than £100) but 4 track days included!!! (or windscreen - £55 more if I want both). For me they insist on off road parking (unlike FJ or Adrian Flux who were OK with on-road) but not necessarily garaged... (not happy with on-road parking!). I'm happy with the £374 quoted (bearing in mind the track day cover) for a first time owner (yes, they ask the 'any previous fast two seater rear wheel drive experience - none in my case!) so can't really complain... (48, max NCB on my 'other')
One thing I have clocked is the difference in credit charges for paying by DD.... £35 in the case of REIS , £8 for FJ, both for deposit plus 5 monthly payments. (Worth considering when you've pushed the boat out on the purchase...!)
Got the off road parking sorted - need to get cracking on the garage! lol

I'm with REIS and whilst 'at home' it must be garaged overnight, something like, between 2230 and 0600 (haven't actually checked the policy).
Never had cause for complaint when dealing with REIS, always get a prompt, pleasant and efficient response to telephone calls and emails.
From memory 2013 renewal came to approx. £360 for 7,500 miles, Agreed Value (20K for 20 year old 7) and trailer insurance (cost £85). Car is 190bhp Zetec. I think the trackday cover now includes, 1 overseas trackday as long as it is with an approved track day operator.

I've just checked again with REIS - my rear access (classified as driveway) needs to be where the car is predominantly parked whilst at home (the time restrictions thing only relates to garaged parking apparently?!). Apparently the car is OK on the road out front temporarily, between trips as long as it spends most of it's time predominantly 'off road' whilst at home.... (2 locked gates to negotiate is a bit of a pain in the arse if you are popping out again in an hours time!).
All is good apart from the vagueness of answer re what value I'm insured for.... Apparently it's not 'agreed value' or 'purchase price' but 'market value'?!?! They were unable to tell me how I go about finding out what that is.... (check out 'Blat Chat' or 'Pistonheads' forum/classifieds was the only answer I was given....!). What does that mean? One would like to think that your purchase price is something approaching market value, but hey, who knows...!) I think it was FJ that mentioned that an independent valuation was required.... apparently REIS don't need any of that. All sounds a bit vague to me....
Also I have no real idea how much I am going to use the car - until I start driving it (it's a weekend/evening/occasional track day toy - as I work from home...). I'm guessing 3000 miles per year should cover it, and have based my quotes to date on that. Do you guess and hope for the best, and then feel restricted in your use..... or play safe and go for say 5000 miles... and then presumably pay a fair bit more? What happens if we throw in a bit of touring... that's gonna bang up the mileage somewhat! What are the penalties for going over?
Any experiences??
