The previous owner purchased a Bosch electronic distributor for the 1700 X-Flow engine http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/1720/imag0009ki6.... but could not fit it because the black casing fouled the block and would not allow the unit to drop fully in.

If this were not so the normal position would be this
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/7718/imag0025qr...
If I turn the unit about 90 deg counter clockwise
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/3184/imag0023mf... it will drop fully in. Provided I follow the normal installation procedure ie. cyclinder No1 on the compression stroke, pulley pointing to TDC and rotor pointing to No1 HT lead, can I fit it this way?

Yes you can mount it in any orientation as long as it is set so that it corresponds to the original timing angles and ignition firing order.

Hi Peter,
I wonder if you can help me with one more thing. There is no indication which way the connector from the dizzy to the coil is inserted. There is nothing to prevent it going on either way.

It can also fit when turned over
http://img502.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imag0028z....
One cable are marked +12v the other is white/pink and unmarked. Unfortunately the fitting instructions were not passed on to me when I bought the car. Any ideas?

Hi David.

Going back a few years ago I used to recon this type of distributor for use in Crossflows and Twincams… I did dozens of them! There is still a picture on my web site….

http://www.jtccc.co.uk/index11153.htm

This is a good modification providing the advance curve is right for the specification of the engine.

If the colours from the plug on the distributor are brown, green and black, they should be wired as follows
Brown = earth
Green = negative side of the coil
Black = positive side of coil.

I don’t recognise the type of coil you are using though… I do know Burton Engineering were selling these though. Maybe they can help?

Hi Buzzer,
Thanks again. I will check it out. I have taken a look at your web site. I note the last update was June 2007. Are you still servicing parts?

Thanks for all the advice. I fitted the Bosch dissy and actually got the engine fired up to a lumpy tickover only to find that there was not enough clearance for the side entry cap to allow me to rotate the dizzy to set the timing. The old Lucas Fl303 is back on and I will fit a contactless conversion later.
