Caterham Launches Insurance Scheme

Bespoke insurance now available for drivers of Sevens

Cover questionable if there is no driver
Cover questionable if there is no driver
Caterham has created its own insurance specifically for Sevens. The tailored insurance cover joins the company’s other services - used car sales, customising and a race programme – to give owners a ‘complete ownership experience’. The insurance has been designed to cover modifications to Sevens and track days, two things that are important to its customers.

Caterham sales and marketing director, Andy Noble, said: ‘For the thrill of driving and the joy of ownership, the Seven simply can’t be compared to any other vehicle; this is why Caterham believe it can’t be insured the same way. With our own insurance, customers are able to come to one of our showrooms and, whether it’s a new or used car they’re interested in, we can sort a complete deal under one roof.’

As an introductory offer, Caterham Insurance is offering four years no claims bonus to new customers. Agreed values can be provided for cars over 10 years old and claims can be made 365 days of the year and all repair work is carried out at one of Caterham’s three locations. All policies include free breakdown cover and there’s no excess to pay on windscreen repair or replacement if the work is undertaken by Caterham.

I have already spoken to Caterham Insurance about a quote for "my" R500 (still in a desperate battle with the wife over buying one)

It was quite the novelty to phone up and say "hi, i would like a quote on an R500" and the chap on the other end said "no problem, is it a K-Series used car or a new Duratec powered one" ! (one of the other "specialist" insurance companies was ten minutes into my quote before the girl realised that it was a car and not a motorbike i was getting a quote for - doesn't really inspire confidence!)

Anyway, after getting back up off the floor and receiving the quote, it was very competitive on price and included 4 free trackdays, which was nice.

They will certainly be getting my business if all that is good and right happens and the missus lets me buy one without the need for a divorce lawyer.

yep, i've also spoken to them and yes they appear very cheap until you consider this is for limited mileage only (3000miles in my circumstance). It was another £100 to move it up to 4000miles :-(

even considering this my insurance was significantly cheaper, with the added bonus of free trackdays.

Do you mean free cover for four track day events or four free track day events?

my mistake!

Sorry, typed it in a hurry - insurance for 4 free trackdays. Unfortunately i will have to pay for the actual trackdays, unless anyone knows a way of getting them free too!

mileage doesn't matter - unless they take your cars actuall milage - i mean, how they ever going to know you did 20,000 miles one year instead of 3,000?

sounds like its just egger lawson (with a 'caterham cars' wrapper over the top) as they've always done the same deal with the first 4 TD's free

not to knock it though, egger lawson are superb and they always seemed to know who i was when i called up and know all eth caterham models in explicit detail

Insight,

On limited mileage policies we have to submit a signed declaration including the start mileage. Quite simply if your mileage is over the agreed limit, when a claim is made [and the assesor will record the mileage] your policy in null and void. Apart from no cover you could then be prosecuted for no insurance.

The other companies don't offer NCB on limited mileage policies, mine didn't anyway. The windscreen replacement sounds good, but I haven't got one frown

I've been with Caterham Insurance for a while - always been the best value for me.

IIRC, Egger Lawson had a fall-out (leading to a court case) with the previous underwriter, Chaucer.

Anyway, Caterham Insurance is now underwritten by Norwich Union.

At renewal time, Caterham Insurance sent me a renewal (roughly the same premium as the prior year BTW) but Chaucer also sent me a quote! Very similar premiums but I was happy to stick with Caterham's own insurance.

In reality, I think this is just a marketing campaign rather than anything new.

Have just contacted Caterham Insurance, and arranged my insurance renewal with them. The PH news item is not news, Caterham Insurance has been in existence for many years; though the underwriters have changed. Caterham Insurance will be having a look at the news item and wondering......

The service, the contact, the cover and the price were all brilliant. Spoke with a lady who gave me her direct line for any questions and she is e-mailing the policy details and forms to me as we speak.

Full cover, intro NCD (3 years for me not 4 - due to a claim in 2006) 4 days track cover, discount for Lotus Seven Club membership, and all the rest of the usual bits and pieces, at a price much much lower than my current insurer.

A great big thumbs up to Caterham Insurance.

isn't it an option to give the milage at the MOT, so again, you could avoid it!

hehe

"how are they ever..." ....I guess the first thing their inspector might do is to check the mileage reading on the speedo and ensure that it doesn't evidence the fact that you have indeed covered 20,000 miles....

Do you own a Caterham?

Egger Lawson fell out with Towergate not Chaucer, which is what they currently are. Or at least their trading name. Well, "fell out", "settled out of court" - hey you make your own minds up. Two sides of the story, no doubt.

This however is something new. And odd things go on if you do FSA searches.

"Caterham Insurance" is still a trading name of Towergate. However the FSA registration number given is that of MCE - who are a broker. Curious.

I was speaking to CC about this recently. MCE are the official people offeirng the scheme. I'm at CC Caterham later in the week, I'll ask some more questions then...

The real story:

Egger lawson Insurance changed there name last year to Comepition Car Insurance, CCI were the trading name for Caterham Insurance... this has now been took from them by MSU.

CCI is still doing Catherhams with 4 free track days inc, i know this because i have a 7 with them.

Richard egger have now been employed by Chaucer and to my opionion very dodgie as they seem to offer everything for nothing, Even though everything does not appear in the policy book.

CCI have always looked after me and Tracey the new manager is fantastic and is always on the phone to clients unlike other managers.

Thanks... Josh

Ah tis more complicated than that ! CCI and Caterham Insurance were both trading names of Towergate Underwriting a year or so ago. Prior to that they were part of THB, which also had TL Clowes which were the Caterham brokers for some time (hence Towergate tlc which is also a trading name of Towergate Underwriting !). In fact I am fairly certain TLC placed their Caterham risk with Independant at the time the Indy went down. What fun that was !

CCI and Egger-Lawson are still Towergate names. As you say Chaucer now have Richard Eggar Insurance.

However, unless the FSA are being slow, "Caterham Insurance" is still a registered name of Towergate (Caterham-Insurance.co.uk) despite it also being used by MCE and Caterham themselves (Caterham-Insurance.co.uk).

No suggestion of shenanigans, just seems a bit tangled !
