I'm looking forward to seeing this thread develop. It looks like you know what you are doing and have the right contacts, but why the Arch imperial chassis rather than the (stiffer ?) metric one? Also I’m interested to know more about the reasons for your choice of gearbox.

I also opted for the Arch chassis. IMO much more nicely made. Nice joints, without the weld spatter powdercoated over.
I also like the fact Arch will take it back, and put it on the jig it was built on to repair it.
I realy doubt the new ones are stiffer, unless they've changed the design. I suspect it's just sales talk. Ansar got quite arsey once, about a thread on BC, regarding a discussion about the merrits of the old chassis over the new ones.

I look forward to seeing this thread develope too. smile

Good effort and certainly the correct chassis choice!

Make sure you dont scrimp on the dampers and brakes and this should be one well built caterham!

Interesting thread! Especially for me, as I have an imperial chassis, duratec engine and Bgh 5 speed box!

IMHO, the 5 speeder (I have the 'long first') really suits the engine...

Enjoy!!

The IVA man doesn't like the standard Bilsteins either. If you use these you need to put rubber around the edge of the aluminium collar on the top of the spring. Can the same not be done with the Nitrons?

looks like a nice build.

The area behind the wheel where the shock sits is now not a testable area so you should be ok. Seems like a bit of common sense is coming into play.

Nice looking spec and awesome colour.

On the chassis front the differences in the metric and imperial chassis were first seen in 2008 RSA champs, CC really didn't know, as it was the first time identical spec (other than the chassis)cars raced. The newer chassis is more effective at getting power down exiting turns, it was also less forgiving in a crash. Arch still do the repairs to all the race chassis whether metric or imperial.

Interesting box choice, we use the Cat 6speed in the R300 race cars which are around 190hp, they lunch boxes often, i know that we are less sympathetic with the shifting, ie no lift upshifts etc but still it is a little fragile and not a great choice for 250plus hp.

Looking forward to watching your build, best of luck

What's the advantage of the older imperial design over the newer metric one?

It is a personal thing, the Arch one is asthetically more pleasing around the joints with the kudos(or not) of being hand made, the newer one is ultimately a better performer, although not by that much in real terms.

I wouldn't have a problem with either chassis if price is the same and you had a choice of builder.......although i will always prefer the performace edge, trying to make the point it isn't that big a deal that people make it out to be.

I have never heard of either chassis being poorly constructed, i have had big smashed in both.....in fact a massive 7g 100mph jobbie in the metric and walked away from them all. Very strong chassis- which ever builder you choose.

Also, unless Caterham have done something about it recently, the diff mounts aren't jigged up properly on the Metric chassis. Ask anyone who's tried to fit the diff in one.
Hence more diff noise transmitted through the car.

Diff mounts vary on Arch cars just as much, diff noise is due to the diffs!

which is transmitted through the chassis, because the metalastic bushes are compressed on one side due to the misalignment.
I've seen posts where folks have had to grind a taper on the bolt, and roger it in with a bloody big hammer.
The Arch ones are fiddley, but not that bad.

Will you be running the loom down the left hand side, to keep it away from the exhaust primaries?
Thanks for the heads up on the powder coating gear. wink

Have you tried the top wishbones, I think the h/lamp brackets will obstruct the wishbones on bump. You should have fitted the imperial brackets that are used on the CSR.
