XBOX360 Core/Premium - what's the benefit?

Just a quick question. Looking vaguely at getting a 360 and i don't really understand the benefit of the premium? I don't think i'll be playing games online as i live with 3 other lads so competition is always at hand, and i can live without a wireless pad. Is the premium only worth it if your going online or are there other benefits of having the hard drive?

I went for the premium - the wireless pad is really worth it - great stuff, although you'll need to fork out for the play and charge kit as well..
The 20Gig harddrive comes filled with stuff, and is very handy - plus you get 1 months free gold online, which you may not use much, but you can download demos and stuff - well worth it, even just for 1 month
as for anything else, well if the 50 quid (well, work out what you'll have to spend on memory cards etc and factor that in) makes all the difference, go for the cheap one..

Theres no memory with the core so no save games. £23 imediately then and thats for 64mb. Plenty for save games but no use for downloads WHEN you decide to go online with it. As Fidgits said the wirless pad is excellent and offers the great boon of being able to turn the consol on/off from the beered up and reclining on the sofa position.

I also got the £20 remote control but thats pretty pointless and woulndt bother if I was doing it again. Would have been much easier to dig a bit deeper on day one and buy the premium system.

if you just want to play games, get a cheaper core. if you want to go online and download etc get a premium.
then whichever you get, get it flashed so you can play back-up games

Yeah was a good statement, c@nt.
So you couldnt get a premium, now theres plenty , core + HDD is almost the same cost as a premium .
Now you can get a Premium (HDD, network cable, component cable & wire;ess controller), + an extra wireless controller AND a game for £299.

to be honest Rob - with Sony's recent announcement about the PS3 delayed until March, there wont be any xmas offers on - simply because the 360 will be the 'present to have' again this year.
So if your going to wait, make it until after the PS3 is launched.. although i'd say get one now..

Apart from people who don't want or need the extras a premium comes with and would rather have £100 in their pockets.
The core is a good thing, for one reason, some people (kids) cannot afford £299 in one go and save their money up to buy a core and then they can save up for the extras without having to go without in between. I remember saving for stereo seperates when I was a kid and getting a bit at a time, I was glad of having the option to do that, and good on Microsoft for providing the same.
Sony on the other hand don't appear to give a sh1t about those who cannot shell out all the cash in one go...........You want all features, you pay full price, you don't want to pay full price, you don't ever have the option to upgrade !!!
I got a core with HDD, headset and cable on launch day as all premiums were pre-ordered (which I know isn't something forced upon people now), but I tell you one thing, I think I would do the same again today just to avoid having that tacky shiny bit on the front
I am a fan of clean and smooth, and the shiny bit doesn't do it for me at all

You could do it over VGA and get 1280x1024.
Cabling is unspecified at present.
Actual technical details are also thin, not sure if they're just going to upscale at the XBox (at which point, your 2K Teev will probably do a better job).
I'm already at 1280x1024 over a VGA cable.

It will run higher if your monitor supports it don't know what the limit is, mine is running at something odd like 1368x1090, I had to adjust the shape of the screen to get the aspect ratio correct, looks the bomb though.
They'll have to bring out a HDMI lead for it though as it's a prerequisite for HD films.

No they dont and no it isnt.
Component can do 1080p no problems , it does it via analog signal rather than digital is all, and cant impliment HDCP. The software update will be a dashboard update for everyone. Not sure if 1080p will be available only when playing HDDVD tho.
HDMI and/or HDCP will only be required if & when movie industries impliment the ICT bit, i.e. switch on encryption for hiDef signals, they've said there not doing that till 2012 now, but they can do it on a disk by disk basis (not on a plaer basis). By 2012 I expect it'll be a non issue anyhow.
As for waiting, £300 for that package is ace, I cant see much else being offered for xmas when theres no competition.
As for the Core, sure it saves you £100, but the 360 realy needs that hard drive and thats £70...

The bigger question is what TV can accept 1080p over component, not many can (2 or 3?) 1080p is a bit of a red herring anyhow unless you have a large display that supports the resolution.

Backwards compatibility, cant play original Xbox games without having the HDD to install the emulators on. Doesn;t matter to everyone but a lot of us have old games we still want to be able to play on.
Rob get the Premium the hard drive was, don't know if it still is, hard to come by when it the 360 first came out. Also a must buy game that will last longer you or the kids more than a few days, "Elder Scolls IV Oblivion", an excellent hack'n slash RPG.
