World of Tanks
Discussion
I decided to have another go from scratch with this game, but for the LOLs I thought I'd create a new account on the US servers. They have two servers (NA West (Los Angeles) and NA East (Washington DC)) and I found the ping to be OK and quite playable on both (from the UK).
When I first started playing on the EU servers a couple of years ago, you had a lousy 50% crew. These days at least they give you a 100% crew. As well as the tier one tanks from the 7 nations, you get a free slot and (for now at least) the T62A Sport, which looks a bit funny next to the others.
I haven't got any money for equipment, repair kits etc, so they will have to wait.
I haven't played tier 1 for a while and it only takes 2-3 games in each to elite them. Plus there's no arty, which is nice. I pretty much shot past tier one originally and only played the British one for any number of games.
I've only had about 20 games so far, but got a Top Gun and Ace Tanker in the Soviet MS-1 in just its 3rd game.
Any else done this? I did think about trying the Russian servers (a couple of them are actually in Amsterdam & Munich like the EU servers), but I thought the language barrier would be a problem.

Finally downloaded and installed this last night. The 7GB download took over three hours! That's rural BT Broadband for you.
I got into the game, changed some settings so that it doesn't run in windowed mode etc. My default graphics setting has gone to medium. I only put a cheap £55 graphics card in my new build, and it struggles a bit with this game.
I had a few rounds last night and my fps was around 25 and below. I don't think it hardly ever topped out at anything above 30. The lag I was getting was quite bad at times too.
I've read that some recent changes have affected the fps and lag in the game. Is this something that others have suffered with, or is it just my crappy graphics card?
I'll have a play with the detail settings when I'm next on and will see if I can make it run smoother.

I wouldn't advise spending any real money right away. At least wait until you have played enough games to have got the feel of it and decided if the game is for you. It is entirely possible to play this game without spending any money at all and you won't be at any real disadvantage apart from having slower progression to the higher tiers.
However when only just starting out, rapid progression to the higher levels will be the least of your worries, so just jump in and have a blast and save your pennies for now.
Once you have had enough games to get a feel for what is going on, you can make a more informed decision on whether or not to invest some real money and what specifically to invest it on.
True. It can be very much a love/hate relationship with this game. It's awesome when you're having good games and lots of wins with teams that know what they're doing but it's very painful when it's loss after loss due to team stupidity. I have rage quit on several occasions recently. However when only just starting out, rapid progression to the higher levels will be the least of your worries, so just jump in and have a blast and save your pennies for now.

I've only recently started putting money into the game but the 3 months premium account and 10k gold came as part of a package with another tank, but once you start grinding the higher tier tanks you'll come to realise that there are some really bad tanks and you just want past them as quick as possible. For me that was the French light tank grind through the AMX 38 and AMX 40 to get the ELC. I just used my accumulated XP with some of the gold I had to convert the XP in order to get past the AMX 38 and AMX 40 without actually buying them or playing them (I've played them before on a different account so know what they're like). So buying some gold is useful for that if you can't stand the grind.
I'd recommend the tier 2 Cruiser III light tank as a good starter tank to practice on. It's a good all-rounder with the 2-pdr gun. It becomes quite a beast once you get your crew trained and then get binoculars and a camo net once you've got a good amount of coins. I certainly prefer it to the tier 2 T18 tank destroyer which everyone else seems to go with.
Trained crew make a massive difference. I basically stopped grinding the tiers at T4/5 and just concentrated on learning the basics and training my crew for a few months.
The only thing that makes me occasionally want to buy gold is when I have to move crew onto new vehicles - even more so if I move them back to a vehicle they have already trained on!
Buying 24hours Premium is worth it if you have a free weekend stuck at home. But as said, you are at no disadvantage in-game if you play for free.

It's worth having some gold so you can move equipment between tanks without having to repurchase it.
It's only 10 gold per item, so it doesn't need much.
I normally pay 100K credits each (rather than gold) to retrain crew on a new vehicle. It drops their skill down from 100% to 90%, so it doesn't take long to get back up again.
I don't know if it's still the case, but if you change your password, they'll give you 300 gold.
Plus you get some credits and maybe 100 gold if you do the tutorial.

I would put the lag down to your broaband connection and the fps to your GFX card as your pc is a new build.I got into the game, changed some settings so that it doesn't run in windowed mode etc. My default graphics setting has gone to medium. Myself running a clocked 5 year old pc @3ghz + 4gb ram and a GTX660 with most settings set pretty high and manage about 50 fps.
Probably have to spend 100 + to get reasonable gfx from this game.
Historical Battle ? Tried the other day with Matilda and after 10 mins wait was told my tank upgrades etc were not correct so gave up.

I thought as much.
To be fair, I only got the graphics card because I needed one and I never intended the machine to be a gaming beast. However, I was interested to see how it handled a simple game like this one.
The broadband things is annoying. I could upgrade to BT Infinity, but can't justify that at the moment.

I just bought one of those Durchbruchswagen2 things. What a heap of st, it's just been added to the tank roster so lower tier games are full of them at the moment. Slow, big target, st armour, st guns. The standard 75mm micro derp gun is terrible. It looks amusing, like a mortar stuck to the front of the tank, but the shell arc is massive and the rounds travel so slowly. Couple that with poor accuracy and hitting moving targets at any kind of range is more luck than anything else, and hitting static targets can be a coin toss. Even then, the alpha is rubbish and the pen is laughable. To me, this seems like a comedy tank, it's ranked a tier higher than it should be.
Is it just me or does Quickybaby have a really annoying voice? Why does he have to talk like a vicar and be all patronising and condescending like we've never played the game before? He also seems to be unable to say more than one sentence without cutting and editing his face cam which also really annoys me. Mr. Jingles' content is much more to my liking. That is all.
You mean his tank reviews on Youtube?
Most people don't use a webcam for reviews I guess, so his edits are more obvious. Some folks find him a bit of a knob sometimes, but he's a decent player. For a new WoT player, he's probably the best one to watch livestream on Twitch TV because he explains his thought process as he goes.

Not specifically his reviews, but his content in general. He never changes his expression and it's the same dull and boring drawl on every video with about 3,000,000 cuts and edits. Anyway, enough of that. I've just had a great night platooning with my mate and his lad. Decided to spend a bit of gold and treated myself to the tier 7 E25 TD . Binos, camo net and gun rummer on this thing make it an absolute beast. Imagine an ELC AMX on steroids with a super fast punchy gun and you've got the E25. It's so low profile that you can get under the turrets of a lot of tanks and just keep on pumping ammo into their weak frontal spots. I was absolutely stting it when I came face to face with a full health Tiger P round a corner but I just drove right up against his front and mirrored his every move. About 20 shots and 1.5 mins later I finally managed to nail him single handedly without even getting a scratch myself. He was absolutely raging in chat - gold noob etc. Definitely my current favourite tank and I'm on an 80% win roll with it after 42 battles.
GAH! What is it with the other IDIOTS on your team?! Started on the top/right position on Westfield in my T25 AT destroyer, went to hide in the bushes right in the top corner for the inevitable heavies coming over the ridge, got a good couple of hits in... when an AT8 on my team pulls directly in front of me, blocks the next couple of shots and calls down the arty on us as he's hanging out the bushes and I can't get away in time My first ever rage quit!
