Amazed by those recommending to stop FF at 10, when 12 is arguably the best in the series.
Its because after 10, they stopped random battles and changed it to in game battles. When I got ff11 it just put me off massively. It took all the tactical fun out of the fighting. Just for the record OP FFVII is still my favourite game of all time and is well worth a look. FFVIII was good I didnt like FFIX, FFX was a great game also.

Also, pick up FTL. It's a very likeable thing.

FTL is very much in the roguelike (Nethack, Angband) tradition. When you are dead, you are dead.
If you are more into strategic RPGs like Ultima or Baldur's Gate, Wasteland 2 has just come out, and from the streams I have seen, it seems faithful to the old system. It's not cheap (£30) or small, and it will take a lot of work to finish:

Am loving Divinity: Original Sin.

If you can remember the old hex-style wargames like Panzer General, try the more modern version, Panzer Corps. http://www.slitherine.com/games/panzer_corps_pc
