Nearly got linux installed on it today - i think i might actually buy the european one* if i can get MPlayer running (HD media player goodness)... Well worth the money for that feature alone. Current version is buggy as hell, didn't like my usb keyboard and crashes often

* the one i have access to isn't mine.

Depending on the outputs the unit has, so Mplayer. MythTV-FrontEnd, especially if the beast has a cat5 port on it.

Tempted to get one in a year or so now.

Give it time. Once all the bugs are ironed out and people are bored of the machine they'll appear in loot and ebay.

As of 2 hours ago, 23,132 PS3 have either been sold or currently for sale on eBay.com. Considering that 240,000 were shipped to stores, almost 10% have appeared on eBay... and I believe the console only came out today in the US. The eBay figure is growing at a staggering pace, it was only around 4,000 24 hours ago.

Yep, you can totaly ignore 99.9% of any bids for silly amounts of money on these, just as you could with the PS2 and Xbox etc.
There will always be people prepared to create accounts just to slap in silly bids for items such as this for various reasons.
Someone could put in a bid for 50 million on a PS3 and a day later the world knows all about it because internet forums are full of people suggesting "OMG..look how much they paid for this!!!".

I'm not sure what i find more disturbing, the fact someone is prepared to spoil an auction with a fake bid, or the fact that some people believe there are ebayers paying thousands for a console

To say what I said in P&P.
I find the whole idea of this happening quite sad; I realise that it's either spoiled bids or Sony's Marketing division. But I find it quite sad. I, personally, think it reflects badly on Sony (who would do well to generate positive publicity at the moment) AND their product (which I find over priced for its capabilities), but then I felt the same about the 360, PS2, xbox and every other over hyped console launch going.

Give me a few weeks and I'll be moaning about Nintendo's launch of the Wii

Which is good for getting a HDTV signal, however what about audio out? It is SP/DIF or TOSLINK?

Had a look at Yesasia.com which normally has this stuff on launch date and is selling PS3 already but, strangely, they have a little note at the bottom stating that they will not ship outside of Asia(?) and the US. Don't know how they get their stock but appears to be some constraints put on by Sony as there is no way Sony can control what they do if the units were obtained by just buying them as regular customers. Will probably wait for the Euro one myself...at least there will be someone to complain to!

Sony put LikSang out of bisiness for trying to grey import PS3's into the UK. Its OK to buy in Asia and private import but grey export is 'illigal'.

Even though its exactly the same box, made in the same factory and sold for sony as a European console would be (baring region coding).

The same AV connector that was seen in the PS2 is used (for composite video/Scart + stereo out) and optical out/SPDIF is used. HDMI also carries the sound.

can already buy in HK as it is available on yesasia..but heard that it is going for silly money in HK as well. Would wait until the initial hype dies down and prices will go back to normal fairly quickly. People in HK get bored very easily!!!

HDMI is both Video AND Audio in digital

this is why the top end VGA card manufacturers are investing in sound too, soon a graphics card will be both graphics and audio, even if its just a pass through for audio.

only need the one cable then u see.

It has a wired network port, the 60gb version has a wifi adaptor built in too.
