ds lite is a smaller more elegant machine. I hav bth and i use both. I dont use the psp for games tho, i only use to watch movies when im on a plane.
I suggest that you get a dslite for your boy, the games are fun and in brain training educational. the psp games seem to be shrunk down playstation games which is no bad thing but i prefer the ingenuity of the ds. trama centre mario, mario kart, nintendogs, animal crossing, brain training, elite beat agents the list of great ds games is 4 times the size of the the psp one.

in either case while your making the purchase i sugges you get:

For the psp- a 2 gig mem card and a logitech case. you will need the case as the psp scratches like feck esp the screen and the mem card is for your game backups, the bigger the mem card the more games you can get on it

For the ds lite- a supercard lite with pass we and a micro sd card 1gb. this is for all your backus and you can store about 25 games on 1 mem card. its brilliant the best thing ever for ds!

if you need any more info i will be hapy to help.

It just doesn't (quite) have the raw power to pull off PS2 like games so the developers miss the mark a bit.

Hmm. Tekken, GTA and WipeOut all feel very very PS2 to me. Excellent versions indeed.

There are a few frame rate issues with all of those games though aren't there?

Now we know the young lad is only 6, like others have said, it's got to be a DS (lite).

Mario, Super Monkey Ball, Tetris DS, Nintendogs are all Triple-A titles.

What is the difference between the DS and the DS lite??

DS is the original, looks a bit prototypey and looks fragile. DS lite is the newer version, smaller, lighter, stronger. inside no real difference both play the same games. DS lite is slighly more expensive.

And less like a £2.99 petrol station desk calc/calendar.

Good choice with the DS. I think the PSP is unsuitable for most children especially under the age of 14, far too expensive and fragile. The DS is atleast rugged in design.

I would buy the PSP. The only reason for me saying that is that GT4 mobile is due for release in January.

2008? 2009?

Seriously, get the PSP. Not only is it a good mobile games platform, but a good handheld media player as well. My stepson has both - his dad bought him the DS for his birthday earlier this year. The DS is *okay* for games, but thats all it does - games. It has wi-fi but only peer to peer, and thats DS to DS. The PSP has true WLAN installed, so we had it connected to our house network in less than one minute.

The DS is clunky, non expandable, and feels plasticky. Its only redeeming feature I am aware of is the backwards compatibility with other Nintendo handheld consoles, although don't quote me on that.

I hope this helps.

The DS does connect to A WLAN network. Because you can play the online games over Wi-Fi and can use the DS browser to go online (admittedly not all sites!)
I have it on mine and was playing mario kart with some guys in scotland!
The DS is a masterpiece and my friend that bought a PSP is annoyed he bought one as all the games are the same as he has on PS2 (well nearly :P)
DS is a great choice.
By the way I enjoy mine and im 19 so you don't have to be a kid

The DS really suffered early on as it didn't have the killer game, they really needed a new mario or mario kart at launch. I used to own a company that imported them into the uk before they where released there, and where we could sell as many PSP's as we could get, the DS's where quite slow to shift.

It outsells the PSP quite easily now, but its not really fair to compair the 2 as they are completely different.

I played with the DS for a while but got bored with it quite quickly, I still use my PSP, but for children or casual gamers the DS is the way to go. I wouldn't give my 7 yr old a PSP.

the games on the Ds are more 'fun' but there is only so much you can squeeze on a cartridge, and if GTA hadn't come out on the PSP then sony would be in real trouble with it now.

I have a Jap PSP I have had since they where released there, so quite a while now, a couple of years, and its very sturdy, no scratches, battery still gives good playing time, the joystick is feeling a bit loose now but works fine.

Any chance of speaking to the parents of his friends?
Best to stick with what they have or are getting, as then they can play multi-players, swap games etc.

I wouldn't wholly agree that all the PSP games are more adult orientated, as you've got stuff like Tony Hawk's, various racing games and stuff like daxter for platform fun.
That said, nintendo games probably are a little more child friendly in looks.

If none of his friends have a handheld or ownership is 50-50, I'd consider what his personality is like. If he's prone to getting bored with games/toys quickly then the psp might be a better option, as I think the sony is better for having budget games.
There's already a few dozen games sub £15 which I've not seen with the DS.

Might be that as a parent, non-media use is a good thing? I know if I had kids I probably wouldn't want them to have access to some things that are on the internet that you could stick on a PSP, if you know what I mean.

I would never consider the PSP anymore, I had one last year, it was fun for a few weeks, but it seems like none of the games on it were actually meant to be played on a handheld - huge loading times, no possibility for a quick game when you get a minute. Then eventually it went on Ebay. It weighs about the same as an elephant. The media aspects are useless, I don't want to be carrying something that heavy just for mp3s, video on the go is overrated - if i'm going to be still long enough to watch a full length film, chances are i'm going to be near a bigger screen. Besides, most phones can do mp3 and video playing now. The internet browser is good, but again the phone takes away the need for that.

The DS has a really great selection of games ideal for when you're on the go, i.e. what a handheld is meant for! I love the fact there are no loading times, so if you get a spare minute you can get a game going within a few seconds, rather than about 5 minutes with some PSP games. Games i'm fond of at the moment are Tetris DS and Mario Kart, but i'm looking to get Electroplankton and Elite Beat Agents - original stuff, rather than ports of console stuff not made for handhelds.

I think overall the thing that made me choose the PSP last time around was the looks, the screen and the convergence, but now the DS Lite is out I would have chosen that - the original DS is pretty ugly! As for the age thing, i'm 21.

Another vote for the DS Lite here. I've got both, and get a bit sick of the boring same old same old console nature of the PSP games - apart form some strange ones like Loco Roco

DS lite has some fun games, and I've found, the online element of the DS lite is far easier to get working that the PSP. Unless the PSP game is specifically designed for online play, it's a right nightmare - Wipeout pure being the prime example.

If you get one as well, you can have some fun chatting wirelessly to your son via the pictochat feature which comes built in.

In addition, if you have a teevee or dvd player that can be controlled wirelessly, the DS will do that too! (via the opera browser).
