To be fair I went into the whole experience fairly fresh as I only found out about the game a few weeks ago and didn't spoil too much for myself.

I was only really expecting to do a lot of exploring so anything extra is a bonus. That said I do hope there are some normal earth like planets so I don't constantly have to mine for products to keep myself alive!

Ok idiot question, found all these waypoints am I missing that i dont actually seem to be mapping them. Is there a button I'm missing for some kind of navigation back to them once they are discovered?

I think the way points seem to show stuff up that exist on the planet. I could be wrong as I only played for a couple of hours so far.

Based on the current reception, I'm yet to actually pick it up. It sounds like a game I'd really enjoy but at the same time it sounds unfinished, I can't abide by spending £40/£50 on a game that isn't actually ready yet. It's a very common problem in gaming these days, developers being rushed and releasing an unfinished product.

I'll be sure to keep an eye on it though, the updates will come, there is talk of owning freighters and building bases, but for now it's a no from me. It's a shame really, a bit more time spent would have probably seen these issues ironed out. I'm looking forward to picking this up in a few months time though!

Played about 6 hours last night after picking it up, I love it.

What the longevity will be remains to be seen, hopefully updates and new content will address that, but so far I think it's brilliant, it's just a super relaxing game smile

Problem is two fold:

1) Hype and expectations. People want indie studios but then expect a GTA experience on day 1.

2) Iterative development. What constitutes a "finished game"? Is it better to release and iterate based on a lot of player data and forum feedback? Or wait longer and release? Or is it finished as a "v1"?

I think Minecraft got it right - release alpha, incomplete - for a low fee and iterate regularly.

I got it yesterday and played for a few hours. Fairly slow paced so far, but that's ok while I'm learning how things work.
The only action so far is some fights with the sentinel robots that don't like you gathering materials. they didn't bother showing up when I got jumped by pirates though.
I have found an upgraded tool widget thingy and am now planning to do some asteroid mining grind to afford a new ship because as others have said the small inventory is a big problem. That said I thought it was all part of the game to encourage you to upgrade.
It seems as though some players just want to start with the best ship and an infinite inventory, just to finish the game quickly. I see this a more long term proposition. Something I dip in and out of.

I really like gradually upgrading, it teaches you to be more efficient with resource gathering.

My starting planet was really cool, it was a sort of green and brown rocky terrain with toxic atmosphere. Not too taxing though as there were enough resources around to keep my equipment topped up. All the animals were docile too, I only had one sentinel alert to me but managed to get away before getting in trouble.

I think I did a 4-minute radius of my ship before taking off for the first time, just wanted to gather as much as possible. Learned quite a few words which helps when meeting NPCs at outposts, I'm on good terms with them now and usually get free stuff in exchange for a few carbon.

Didn't want to use my preorder bonuses straight away, but I found two Exosuit upgrades - first was free, second was 10k (I think each extra slot goes up by another 10k) so I redeemed my code for 10k units and bought it.

Finally flew into space and docked at an orbiting space station, did a load of trading and made quite a lot of money, around 300k.

Left there and explored 3 orbiting moons of my starting planet, all 3 totally different terrain, fawna, flora and atmosphere, it was awesome. On the last one (this was at about 1am) I decided to use my upgraded ship preorder code rather than spend resources on my current ship. The bonus ship is pretty cool, doesn't look too far off an X-Wing. Few extra storage slots and a secondary space weapon, so well worth the upgrade.

I can certainly see it being a marmite game, but for me it's exactly what I was looking for, and I hadn't particularly hyped myself up about it (although I'm pretty excited whenever I'm getting a new game), so my expectations were realistic.

I played a fairly substantial amount yesterday. It's as engrossing as you want it to be. I can fully understand how you could spend all day on one planet looking for resources, learning etc. It really is incredibly vast.

I struggled to put it down last night and went to bed about midnight.

Remember to take screenshots guys! And you can also change the setting on PS4 so that the 'Share' button takes an instant screenshot rather than opening the Share menu.

I got some nice shots of my first planet, new ship and few animal encounters, just need to get them off my PS4 to post smile

The community for this game is pretty toxic.

Jim Sterling posted a pretty brutal review and gave it 5/10. His website got DDOS'd by NMS fans!

I'm really enjoying it. It feels a bit like an Elite Lite. I haven't at one point thought "It would be nice if this was multiplayer".

Which is odd as the streaming community was pretty positive this week from what I saw.

I'll try, although I forget to do it about 98% of the time hehe

The way the game drops you off, with very little explanation and lets you figure it out for yourself, I can see why people who like more structure wouldn't like it. Personally it captivated me but I just don't have the words right now to explain myself properly.

Ok, the graphics in some places do clip a bit and if you're expecting hyperrealistic everything then you are going to be disappointed. If you're not as concerned about the graphics and want to immerse yourself in something that will never be the same twice then in my opinion it is peerless.

The lack of carrying space can be frustrating at first but it does get better as you upgrade. Once you figure out what you can keep and what you can throw after the first few hours things become a lot easier.

I get the feeling that the peole who formed their opinions from watching someone else play on YouTube or twitch before it came out and got the day one patch have made a mistake by basing them on someone else's experience. I can also see why it was kept under wraps for exactly that reason. It's a game of discovery, travel and adventure, not experiencing second hand.

Quick hint that I found out last night (spoilered in case people don't want to see tips):

If you haven't already - when you add upgrades, say to your weapon, place them next to each other and the tiles will change colour and match each other, this 'synergy' apparently makes the tool work better. For example, you mining tool has the 'mining mode' preinstalled, if you then install an upgrade for more powerful mining, place it in the tile next to to and they'll both get orange outlines.

I just need some fuel for my hyper drive now smile

Discovering plants and animals is quite a good way to get credits.

So far the only thing putting me off the game is the fact that it seems impossible to meet other real players which yes is fine if it's because the odds are stacked against it but it seems that even if you are at the same place as someone else you can't see each other.

I didn't immediately realise that you can go into 'Discoveries' and 'upload' the things you've found for units. I'd fully discovered my first planet which earned me a decent bit of space cash once I got to the space station.

I started after only ever having seen the original launch videos (several years ago now), so it really was a case of going in blind.

It's not a thing you get to experience very often in a video game, but being dropped in with absolutely no knowledge of how a game works or what happens is properly exciting. I actually felt really stressed as it was -35, my life support was dropping and I was genuinely worried about leaving my ship for any length of time.

Once I figured things out and bravely trekked off to find some resources I eventually made the hop out into space, which once again was a bit of a revelation for me. I headed for a beacon and now reside on a beautiful lush planet with very little in the way of danger, so I'm intending to fully explore it and spend quite a bit of time there before heading out again.

The first few hours alone have been worth the price of entry, the rest is a bonus but I'm no rush.
