Minecraft - £8 Very well spent
Discussion
I'm looking at seeds now (and have been for the past few hours). I'm wanting all the main biomes (incl Jungle) somewhere reasonably close by which is proving to be quite a task in itself, but as nice as amplified terrain looks in other people's videos I have to admit I'm starting to shy away from the idea now. There doesn't seem to be any balance of towering mountains with reasonably flat terrain, it's all towering mountains and that will make getting about extremely tedious after a while and doesn't really lend itself for building anything that requires a sizeable area of land. Also, I'm on a fairly high end PC here and I'm already down to double digits FPS and using nearly a gig of RAM as the terrain tries to load. It took nearly 30 seconds for Steve to finally load in when first opening the world.
To give you an idea of what sort of performance hit you could expect, load this seed in a single player world, have a fly around and see how long terrain gen takes: -4832403083161134590.

Luke was concerned about the amount of lag we would get on amplifiedTo give you an idea of what sort of performance hit you could expect, load this seed in a single player world, have a fly around and see how long terrain gen takes: -4832403083161134590.

The server would be able to handle that or if not then it'd a simple process to upgrade to a different package with a higher RAM allocation. But from my own experiences of some amplified worlds I've tried, my concerns are that it would be virtually unplayable for anyone on a mid range or poverty spec system. There's a very noticeable FPS drop from using a standard terrain gen world, even without the jungle close by. Given the challenges, I'm thinking of rerolling with a standard world but all biomes close to hand, nice green grass spawn area (not that stty savanna grass colour) and everyone staying closer together this time so that spawn gets populated with bases (like Hermitcraft Hermit Hills) instead of people going thousands of blocks away and never seeing each other.I will set it up tonight after sleep (was on night shift last night).
Steve did you recover your account?
After looking at well over 500 seeds this is about the best I could find in terms of having everything within a reasonable distance. Only things that are miles away are ice spikes and mega taiga (mossy cobble, podzol).
Here's an overview in Amidst mapper. Rough coverage is about 3800 blocks horizontally in each direction from spawn and 1800 vertically in each direction from spawn to give you an idea of scale.
And here it is zoomed out showing the other rarer biomes, roughly 7800 wide x 3600 high.
Spawn point is 0,0 and spawn protection is on by default but I'm trying to get it turned off by host as it's a PITA not being able to interact with anything unless you're admin.
I've made a small wheat farm for food, a small storage shack, stairway down to mines, a link to nether and penned in a few animals for breeding. I plan to build a villager breeder and iron farm in the spawn chunks so bear in mind that there can't be any other wooden doors, villagers or golems in use by anyone else within approx 100 block radius of spawn.
There are some rabbits hopping about near spawn too but not been able to trap the little blighters yet.

helping yourself to stuff in other people's chests unless OK already given.
not repairing creeper damage in developed areas.
floating trees because can't be arsed to pillar up and remove all logs.
not replanting crops or saplings in player made farms.

Oooh - interesting....
Ive pulled a muscle in my neck so playing MC is about all I am capable of. Ill fire it up and see if the problem I had with really laggy/choppy gameplay is still manifest. Fingers a bit crossed!
Yay! weird lag issue is fixed! if the map is a true representation I will seek to build a railroad to the west coast and make that into a 'port' of sorts. Gonna need a lot of iron, gold and R/S...Ive pulled a muscle in my neck so playing MC is about all I am capable of.
