Have you tried a PSTV already? I had one but the lag was so bad even a patrol was unplayable, let alone anything else!
I haven't actually, although I had thought that it had been well received, having looked at a few reviews. Thanks for the heads-up . I'll go for the TV with the best picture etc and if it happens to be a Sony with PS built in, then so be it.
LC, funnily enough, I've just come back from Richer Sounds and saw a curved UHD Samsung. I have to say, the picture looked stunning. Nice choice! Davie, if yours is the same/similar then you're a lucky fella. . The nice bloke told me that the picture is set to a mode for shop displays (very bright with high contrast?!) so the picture will be even better at home with "softer" settings.
He mentioned "calibrating" and I thought it was a wind-up. Having looked online, this appears to be a thing. You can buy DVDs to help set up!
It's a tele FFS.
Anyway, I'll be on tonight to finish the exotic sword quest, in case anybody else is in the same boat and to try to finish the raid started on Tuesday.
I suppose my philosophy is that once you get used to something, you stop noticing.
Kind of like when I get a new gadget. I'll read the instructions and surprise myself about functionality and options... and then leave it in one setting and just use that forever more.
Right, I'm off to calibrate my toothbrush.

Calibration is worth doing for movies and HD broadcast/streaming content as it is all about getting the colours and contrast bang on (deep blacks etc.) But, it is all about the visuals so if you're looking for a TV exclusively, or mostly for gaming then no amount of calibration will fix high input lag. For me, it probably wouldn't make a huge difference but, as you like your competitive multiplayer, high input lag could put you at a disadvantage - it would be a brilliant excuse you could use often every time you get rekt.
Alright, alright, calm down you lot.
In all seriousness, I find all of this quite interesting. I'll look into optimum settings for the current 42" for gaming and see if I can surprise myself.
Good to know there are a few decent TV-bods in here. I'll bounce some ideas off you when I narrow my search down.

There is probably a 'game mode' that you can attribute to whichever input you're using for the PS4.:
Right, shall we get back to discussing Destiny? I think I need to exchange some old materials, my vault is a right fking mess!!
Calibration can make a massive difference to the whole experience and can also impact input lag. I calibrate all my displays (and anyone elses I can...) properly and with a correctly set up display you'll be able to see everything on screen as it was intended to be seen and with Destiny that includes all those dark scenes. Proper set up of brightness, contrast and gamma will give you the shadow detail and low light detail you need in those scenes.
Generally with proper calibration, you turn off all the picture 'enhancements' too and this will reduce input lag. Ultimately though, the display you buy is the biggest influence here. The latest Sony LCD panels (not 4K) have very good input lag properties (in Game mode). I was looking at large monitors for my study but settled on a W705 series 32" display in the end as the input lag is only around 13ms or similar to the fastest monitors.
If you're interested in panels for gaming, check out www.hdtvtest.co.uk. They provide proper reviews of the panels they see there. AVForums are quite good too.
If anyone's near South Northants, I'd happily calibrate their display(s) for fireteam support.
All that being said, optimising latency for Destiny seems like folly with how their net code deals with latency compensation. And the cheats of course. My broadband offers very low latency (12ms to the beeb) and the display is of course fast and I still see horrific lag related issues at points playing the game.

I'm a massive tech-nerd, and it's also worth noting that while a lot of TVs offer a game mode for minimum input lag, this will also usually work by disabling all other processing effects. If your TV has a feature that internally increases refresh rate, this will be disabled in game mode. My TV can process upwards of 800mhz refresh rate (and some of the newer high-end HDTVs blow that out of the water), which makes fast moving scenes beautifully smooth, but it isn't compatible with game mode.
My vote would go to Samsung over Sony. For my money, the TVs look better, have better processing software and they're comparable on price.
In-game, there's a new patch, reducing the effect of the Three-of-Coins farming by reducing the effect if you pop multiples in quick succession but leaving it intact if you're running strikes as intended, which is very sensible. Black Spindle nerf as well? I wouldn't bet against it. A few other minor fixes, nothing noteworthy.

Found the daily quite tough today, wiped a few times. Thing is, I don't remember doing that as a story mission must have been during one of my late night sessions. I do however HATE those Taken Captains with their blinding blast thing quickly followed up with their sword melees. Couple that with their tendency to jump about AND a solar shield and I think they are the most annoying enemies in the game for me.
The daily throws three of the buggers at you at the same time
Edit: dendency? Corrected

Either way, it seems good for gaming. Happy days.
I'll stop taking this thread O/T for now, but will be back when I've seen some sets and done some research.
Back to Destiny. I finally saw Oryx for the first time yesterday. Holy Cow he's a monster . Thrilling to finally nail the penultimate encounter but disappointed with drops. I did drop a 305 class item which takes my light level to a cool 300 but I've had zero weapon drops. Because RNG. I did get my exotic sword though.

Don't have a good light level (stuck at 269) and don't have any exotic weapons = ball-ache of a mission for me. Used a Three of Coins, nowt to boot!
Don't worry, if you pop another one before killing your next ultra, the buff will stack. I've been using them as intended for the last week and have gotten 3 exotics out of about 8 or 9 strikes, which seems like a reasonable return to me.Always happy to help with daily missions and whatnot if you see me online
