I managed to get on ok last night, its all a bit confusing at 1st!
Couple of things I found:
1) Everyone else in a public lobby is an arse and will kill you for no reason
2) As other people have said, make sure the 1st car you steal is half decent as it will become "yours"
3) Don't bother going to a cash machine (if you can find one!) to bank your cash, people will loiter nearby and kill you, simply go on to the internet on your phone, find maize bank - under money and finance - and deposit your cash through that

I didn't try online until I got an obvious "stinky bait" message at about 20:30 from Graham saying it was working and it was good....I'd already turned the xbox off, so fired it back up to give online whirl........made a character then failed to get into a game at all, my character was just stood in a car park with message "waiting for players" then "joining session" with the little swirly thing going round and round.
After 10mins of that I turned it off....Thanks Graham, yeah I fell for it.
Tried it this morning and BAM! straight in, did the first race against Lamar...bet EVERYTHING on myself and won

I wondered how the encounters would pan out. I drive the other side of the road and it's 50/50 whether they shoot. I had one guy start following, me, but hang back so I killed him. Didn't trust that when I went to a mission, bank, or hold up that he wouldn't kill me.Couple of things I found:

Had another where he started firing at me, but drove off. I chased. Exchanged a few deaths and then went our own way. I drove away to leave him alone. He killed me 15 minutes later when I was on foot and had just spawned. I spent 10 mins chasing him down and killed him a couple of times. Then I left him alone and stayed away. He didn't follow this time.
Had another guy follow me into a store after I held it up. I couldn't get out, but the cops killed him....and me. So thanks mate.
I don't mind it too much. It's to be expected and is the point of the game. Although to be fair. If I've killed someone a couple of times I back off and I've also been beaten a few times.
Had people just drive into me for no reason.
Just play with friends and then you only encounter the public in missions, death match etc.
I think you could try being the aggressor for a bit. People will back off.
Passive mode is only $100 and is handy.
