Let me get this straight...

production cars, massive maps, loads of driving around aimlessly if you so wish... on PC?

Err, where do I sign?

Im assuming if they go to so much trouble to give you so much space, the cars themselves may actually drive relatively realistically? or is this a game that will sell out to the masses like GT4's awful physics engine?

Yep, should be a damn good game.

Not sure on the handling, thinking maybe NFS5 Porsche Challenge type driving. Not really real but it'll do just for fun.

GT4 isn't that bad by any means. If this game has physics the same as GT4 it'll be great!

Its annoying though. Unless you use understeer assist, the cars simply wont turn in - and its not as if you are entering the corner too fast - none of the cars can even donut! - infact, with the understeer aid on, front wheel drive cars are the best for it! With the aid turned up to about 8, the cars are acceptable in thier turn in, without being too arcade-like, however there are still times you come into a corner, start to run wide a little - lift to bring it back on, and find the games putting the throttle on to counter the braking of the front wheels to get it round the corner.

Its just annoying.

I drive with all aids off, and often with the N1(think thats them, the weakest tyre) tyres, using the 900 degree DFP wheel.

All cars feel to turn-in really well, and with the road tyres lift-off oversteer really is there in all the cars!

My only gripes with GT4 are the odd association of wheel spin speed with car attitude.

Take any powerfull fwd car, no aids, full RH or LH lock, boot it, the fronts spin, and the car back end comes round and it oversteers!
Somehow the fact the front wheels have lost all lateral grip (from spinning longitudinally) makes the rear tyres do the same, and it slides round!

Weird things like that worry me. The low-speed tyre physics are rubbish. Try doing a 0-60 with the 3 first tyre types in the Focus RS and get under 10 seconds! It just spins and spins and spins!

Once rolling above 20-30mph though most cars feel really good

Personally I don't mind Test Drive Unlimited being like NFS5 or at a push NFS4 if it's got good gameplay and the dynamics are realistic (ie, not totally arcade).

As with all games hopefully there will be enthusiast driver players out there who tweak it to make it feel better for their tastes...

Downloaded the new demo last night. The download failed three times whilst in progress! however two and a half hours later i was playing it. First car i took out was the f430 spyder. At the first couple of corners i realised the lack of feedback you get from the car and how easy it was to drive. Non of this weaving from side to side stuff. Take a corner at big speeds and the back will violently swing out however its very easy to catch and also easy to hold which bought a smile to my face. So i just started powersliding everywhere i went. The handbrake didn't really appear to be very useful.... well not as useful as the handbrake in PGR3. I tried racing a couple of random computer racers on the island. Thought it was really cool the way you set the route you race on. I was racing a gallardo spyder and unsure what the difficulty setting was but this guy was really quick off the line and i only caught up with him when he crashed on a corner on the first race. Did a few more races with him and although i won each time we had a good few battles during the races. It was getting late so i decided to try out one more of the cars (mustang or cobra) or the bike. I thought i'd give the bike a blast. Although it was a lot of fun to blast around the island at 200mph and jump over hills it wasn't the authentic bike experience (although i wasn't expecting it to be!!). I found it hard to take corners smoothly and fast on the bike (unlike motogp) and the bike always want to center itself which means off a jump will would be very unlucky to crash on your landing. Didn't get a chance to try out the other cars but i'll play with them at some point over the weekend. Still in my oppinion it's a good game and i'm sure the powersliding in the cobra or other cars will be a lot of fun.

Not sure if it's just me, but i find controlling the cars truly horrible.
I'm not saying i can't use them and power slide etc etc, i can, but it just
feels wrong to me via the pad.
And the bike...well, i would simply never use it as it feels even worse.
You pick up a pad and load GT4 for example (or even something like Driver) and you feel pretty much fully in control.
They got the pad to control balance spot on imho.
Everything you do on the pad seems to be mimicked on the screen instantly.
I'm not talking about GTR/Rfactor realisim, just the fact that it feels so right!.
In test drive, i just feel totaly detatched from the pad and the car.
It feels like anything i do that requires precision turns out to be 50% luck rather than skill.
Funnily enough Forza made me feel much the same.

I always feel like i am over or undercorrecting and even the very basic tasks can involve
a lot of luck.
I have even used a pad on rfactor and GTL etc with all assists off or on and it feels superb,
so why does this and forza feel so sh#te?.

Maybe it is just me?.

Digby, you played with the driving aids to see if it makes any difference?

I like the look of this game. It appeals to me quite a lot. Hope to be going for a cruise with some PHers when it's released.

I just hope it is as playable and realistic as the original one was back on the 386. The freedom to see if I can get up/over/under/jump/clear this was fantastic.
