Xbox 360-red circle of light

After singing the praises of my 360 to any one who'll listen,tonight at 10 months old it's finally given up the ghost.
It freezes up and then three segmants of the circle of light flash red!
I've been on the support website and it tells me to ring the support line who i think have gone home for the weekend.
Has anyone had this problem(i think it's common on early models)and know how long to sort it out?

Your consumer rights should let you take it straight back to the shop you bought it from for a replacement, otherwise you'll have to wait til monday I guess to speak to the returns hotline. They usually get a new one out within a week, so if you want it before then I would try taking it back to the shop first.
be careful though cos i've heard stories of downloaded xbox live games being tied to your boxes serial number and because of that they don't work offline if you just put your hard drive in a new 360. Best thing to do is phone microsoft and see if they can send you out a box for your old one, they'll send you a factory refurb back.

GPU and CPU heat compound, add some arctic silver under those heatsinks and
slap a fan on the side and bottom.
Bit of a rushed job, but i thought what the hell.I know how hot these things get
and instead if buying one of the after market coolers, i just made my own while bored
one night
No warranty for me then!.

A guy I work with did that and had a new one within a week.
Has anyone here bothered with the exptended warranty? Normally I wouldn't spend £60 on an extra 2 years cover but it seems like quite a high number of these things break.

That looks superb, good job. Not so sure i fancy giving that a go on mine. Has anyone bought one of the aftermarket coolers? Do they do the job? I may well buy one.
It was a bit of a bodge job really because i wanted to use a hole saw for the cut.
I couldn't find them though so just used a pencil line and a dremel. : p
I had fans and a few grills still knocking around from PC modding days so used those.
As for the other coolers, i don't know anyone with them but i do hear the
"proper" way to go is water cooling lol.There are reviews of the coolers you can buy knocking around
on the net though if you search.They may not be as good as water cooling, but as Tescos suggests, every little helps.
If you want to go nuts, avoid DIY water cooling and spend the same amount again as you probably spent for the console, you could always get one of these:

It's a shame anyone feels the need to cool a console though, they should have designed the poxy thing better in the first place.
All i would say is that when my console was in bits, the GPU and CPU heatsinks were almost untouchable, they were that hot.Remember that this was with the case off too, imagine what they are like inside a closed case!.
My 360 ran ok btw before i put that fan on it, but i just liked the idea forcing some air into it.
Also you can hardly hear the fans i installed, unlike the DVD drive which seems to sound like a jet engine ALL the time..sigh.

I just bought an intercooler for my 360 after seeing it advertised on Amazon.
I got mine off Ebay for about ~£10, It clips onto the back of the Xbox and the power cable plugs directly into it so no separate supply is needed, nice and neat.
It's got 3 fans in it so its pretty noisy, but its worth it to keep the temps down.

Water cooling would be good, i did kind of give that a try for my pc however it was starting to get expensive with the parts i needed. So I never finished that!
Think i might just get one of these bolt on coolers. Gameplay.com seem to have a few.

After the return of my faulty Xbox 360 which looks like a new unit i was hoping all would be well and good in Xbox land again.
But on reconnecting i'm now getting 1 red light and a system error E71 screen!
Looks like another call to foreign customer support!

I did read that some people were having issues with red circles of light due to having
the units plugged into surge protectors or cheap extension leads etc.
Is yours plugged straight into the wall socket?
Worth a go anyway if not.
Other still have temp probs though and have found removing the heatsinks and adding better
transfer compound has sorted their problems.That's an extreme option of course
I was fully aware of the power supply issues btw stig, there are various issues with 360's,
i just wanted a free cooler for mine and enjoyed taking things apart

(the typical)RRoD is a general hardware error but usualy means an issue with the GPU.
