I was just reading the over-heating thread the other day, and thinking to myself 'I must be one of the lucky ones not to have had a problem with my 360'.
Then I turn it on today, crack on COD3 and after 30 seconds of intro vid- it stops. So I turn it off, and re-start and there are 3 red lights blinking at me, mocking me for my confidence in its reliability. Ah well, it was a release day 360, so I have 11 days of warranty left !

Pick any forum that has a relatively popular gaming section and you will
see you are not alone mate.
Some have died quite quickly, others may have taken a year and of course
many seem to be fine and may continue to be fine.Who knows.

There are still people who choose to ignore these problems though and believe
they are not really happening.
Some suggest that Sony fanboys must have started the 'circle of red light' rumours
because their console is "running just fine".
Others have suggested user error kills them etc!
That's all rubbish of course.

The fact is lots of them are dying with many many people now having owned two or three consoles.
All i can suggest to you (assuming you do not want to open yours up and try a fix yourself) is to
be prepared for it to happen again and you won't be so disappointed if it does.

Amiga! *slap* Atari *slap* Mega *slap*
The fanboy war has always been and will always be.

Rather annoying sometimes as well.

Indeed.
It didn't take many kids long to progress from being simply amazed at any
new technology, to treating it as a "my Dads bigger than yours" situation.
I just appreciated all the gaming leaps though. If some lucky kid had a
coleco or intellivision, i just wanted to play on em' because they made
our Atari VCS look pants
NES? Master system? who cares, let's just play!

C64 vs Spectrum was always the argument i remember most in the playground mind.
Well, that and betamax vs VHS to a certain degree.
Things were really heating up by then.People had embraced new technology, it was
appearing in many homes by then.
Back in those days i'm sure anyone who said the Speccy was better did so
simply because that is what they got for Xmas etc and they probably got
one due to it being cheaper.
You could never really look at a Speccy game with it's 8 colours,
squidgy keys and basic sound and compare it to a C64 surely?
I still enjoyed them though but was glad i went the C64 route.
It was much the same story with the SNES and MD, the SNES was technically
more advanced but that didn't stop people telling me they were "crap"
just because they got a megadrive.

The fanboy seeds were planted long long ago and like you say will be around for ever.

Yawn.

Back on topic anyway, i was just reading about how a guys 360
hard drive died on another forum.
Then i popped back to a forum i have been a member of for years, one where
we have been talking about 360's recently and a mate of mine from that site who
had owned his 360 for one day just had his hard drive die aswell!.

People can post all they like about how nothing is wrong with their console
and explain how good it has been etc, i will still keep my fingers crossed every time
i switch mine on however .
It doesn't seem to matter when you purchased them either, a day old or a year old, they
seem to be just as likely to have issues if you get unlucky.

My Grandad used to say "the more they have, the more there is to go wrong" regarding cars years ago,
maybe the same can be said of consoles now.

Yeah but the NES was much better anyway!

Seriously though, what recourse is there (if any) if the red light of death occurs after a year?

From what I understand Microsoft are extending this beyond the year. The retailer will cover the year with their standard statutory rights - but Microsoft will back-up beyond that. I understand you need to talk to them directly and they will sort it out, but it might not be the speedy turn around that the likes of Game etc might offer....

Its a good move though and they didn't have to do this, so credit to them. However, I also understand that later 360's have had the problem cured, though only time will tell on this....

I have 4 friends with XBox 360s.

Of the 5 of us, 3 have had consoles go bang (mine was faulty out of the box). One guy has had his fail twice.

That's 6 consoles with a 50% failure rate in 12 months. That's very very poor indeed.

And I think my optical drive is on the way out also....

My XBOX360 had the 3 light ring last week. Ring the XBOX Microsoft support line number. They will ask you a few "Have you tried this..." questions. Give them your XBOX serial number and your email address etc etc. Check email for UPS/DHL courier email. Follow the links in the email and then printout the shipping address/note. Box up the 360 on its own, in a plain box with printout. Ring UPS/DHL number for collection. Following the package via tracking number. Wait a few days (maybe a week), but hear nothing from Microsoft. Be totaly suprised when UPS/DHL turn up on your doorstep with replacement. Very quick and simple for me.

I had the Red light come on with my bro's 360 (he let me have it for a week). Thought i had stuffed it, as i moved it while it was running. Nearly shat myself. Turns out the Video lead fell out of the back slightly. D'oh.

What 3 lights are lit up, different ones mean different things.
Have you tried unplugging everything, pads, hard drive, Wireless adaptor and then starting it up?

The light in the top right quadrant- if the console was lying down, was the only one unlit- according to the Xbox.com support site, this means the console has suffered a serious hardware failure. UPS already have it. The whole process has been simple so far.
Does anyone know if I will get a new 12 month warranty to cover the repair ?
Cheers,
Rob
