The Thumb process still has to pull down the full image - in your case that thumbnail is still 268Kb and 1280 x 960 - it's just that the PH software makes it small for everyone. So posting large images (like yours) still involves large downloads.

Oops! Sorry, I didn't realise. redface
It's a 'disadvantage' of having the luxury of a T1 link. biggrin

I'm on more than that but the image hosting places are sometimes slow so keeping file sizes for all users is important.

I just thought I'd share a handy photo hosting place specifically for cars. It's free, it's unlimited and it's a one-button upload for any number of photos.

http://www.motortopia.com/

Create yourself a garage, upload your photos (into albums.) There are pre-assembled links to embed your photos on external sites.

Obviously not any clues?

As a newbie in this part of PH, I was just reading this to make sure I post acceptable size images smile Had resized a few to 900 wide and upon reading this realise that a little less is more civilised for the peeps out there smile

IMO this sticky should stay but there seem to be loads for the competition threads...

Or keep the first post and scrap the conversation under it.

750 wide is a crap idea. Looks like a postage stamp on most computer monitors. It was thought up when we viewed 800 X 600 and were all on dialup.

In a photography forum, we should at least give the photos a chance (970 wide works well on >88% of computers worldwide... and I'd suggest 99.9% of those in here)

It's file size, not pixels wide that should be limited. (I can post a 750 wide 3 mb file if I want!)

Can we update the 750px wide rule to 1024 wide?

640 or 750 is wide enough.

It takes effing ages to load pages with files bigger than - say - 200K.

Just to resurrect this, as I've noticed more threads recently where people are just posting 2-4Mb files straight off the camera (so-to-speak) and I'm having to go off and make a cup of coffee just to let the thread load up.

I know many people have quicker connections now, but I sadly don't, and it's rather frustrating. Any chance we could remind people not to post up huge files...I know it's more work to resize something and upload a 700- or 900-pixel version, but only a few minutes worth...

I usually post the Flickr large size 1024 x ??? as the Medium 500 x ??? looks way too small.

It's a bit of a pain creating a 750 pixel picture just for the competition each month, I think they should increase this to at least 1024 pixels.

Sorry Havoc if this takes a long time to download but at least you'd get to see the pictures at a decent size.

There's the thumbnail option. A click away from the big file.

How do you post an image that when clicked on links to the Flickr page rather than to just the image? I thought it would be:

[pic]url to picture[/pic] | url to page

but that doesn't seem to work
