I'm off on holiday to San Francisco at the end of the year and I want to take an SLR camera with me to take some decent pics as I won't be going there again for a very long time.

What is the best place to get a secondhand one from? Do I try a shop like the London Camera Exchange/Jessops or try ebay?

Any reccomendations? My budget is about £150 for the camera and at least one extra lens.

Unfortunately it went a few months ago.

However, the world is full of good film SLRs - I just sold an almost mint Praktica B200 with 28, 50 and 135mm lenses, case and flash for £70. Not the latest camera I know, but great value.

For £150 you should be able to get something rather newer and better with autofocus - hunt eBay and see what you find.

If he isn't, following my recent purchase of a Ixus 500 for SWMBO, I have now got a EOS 500 and either a 28/200 Sigma lens or a 28/105 & 75/300 Canon lenses that I will be trading towards my EOS 20D that got ordered last night.

Nigel, mail me if you're interested.

Simon.

Just to lay another offer on the table:

Following my upgrade to the D70, I've got a kit you may be interested in:

- Canon EOS 300
- 28-300mm Tamron 3.5-6.3 LD IF
- UV Filter
- Circular Polarizer
- Remote Release Cable
- LowePro Bag

As you may have read in my previous posts, I personally never got along with this kit. That's just down to me though - a friend took it away for a weekend and came back with some great shots.

As a result of me never getting on with the camera, I hardly used it and the whole lot is pretty much in mint condition. I used my point and shoot instead. Heck, I don't believe I've actually used the polarizer or the remote once out on the field!

Lemme know if you're interested (or anyone else, for that matter).

Out of interest -

Nikon D70 $999 in the US of A - Best price on Kelkoo £725

Sony DSC-T1 $499 - just ordered in the UK for £270

Current Exchange rate (credit card) about 1.75. Not much in it then! I should have bought the Nikon, but it was a good idea to pass up on the Sony after all!

Note that you can get it in three forms:
1) Body only
2) 'Kit' with 18-70 lens
3) 'Kit' with 28-80 lens.
If you were planning to get the body only, it requires D or G series lenses to work properly. Of the two kits, the 18-70 is (IMHO) more desirable as it gives much better wide angle.
