Give me a US Shopping List
Discussion
Hi all
I am off to the States in a few weeks and have been saving my pennies to replace my current digital with an SLR. I've read a lot of previous posts on what to buy and the importance of a decent selection of lenses etc and yet I'm still fairly confused.
More or less decided on a Canon 20D on which I reckon I can save around £400, my main subjects will be cars both static and racing, Tennis and Horses (active and Static), to save my brain what lenses would anyone suggest? Also as this model is the same (I think) here as the US will there be any hassles with warranty as would happen with the Rebel?
Many thanks
Nick

Bodies are not covered by a world wide warrenty, lenses are.
Given that this is the case (thanks) how reliable are current digital SLR's? I have a twenty year old Canon A1 that has never missed a beat from new!
How many people on here have made warranty claims?

I looked at the title and thought for a minute you were going to bring us back all the things we wanted. mine would have been a fairly long list
Difficult one this. You want to cover a wide range of subjects and we know nothing of your shooting style.
See - personally I haven't got a wide enough lens for some static cars shots I would like. Horses are big things and you might want to get up close for the static stuff. And for your moving targets are you wanting to get in to see the detail, like the sweat falling off the tennis players face?
Don't forget that sensor sizes vary too. So if someone says 20-21mm do they mean for 35mm film - in which case what does that translate to on a 1.5x, 1.6x or 2x efective crop with a smaller sensor?

The failures I have heard about fall into the following categories:
1)it didn't work when it came out the box
2)it started failing in the first week
3)firmware upgrade didn't work
4)tried a new lens/accesory/gadget and ran into problems
5)dropped in vat of boiling oil/the sea/down a mountain
6)battery ran down while in the middle of writing to card/doing something
We've not had these things round long enough to see if they can put up with 3, 5, 10, 50 years of use and abuse, so anything else is speculation.
You can get international warrenties from third party companies to over the body, and the price is very negotiable when you buy your camera
I went for one as it was only costing me about £30 or so for a 3 year international job on my 20D, whether it is any use or not remains to be seen!

But do you have to return it to the country of purchse for attention?

Going staright in with the 70-200 2.8 is really serious, I am right in thinking that it is circa £1400?

It seems that all those shops on shopcart.com are owned by the same people! I think B&H is the one to check out, they have most of the stuff.

You can just call in to B&H in New York, on the west side of Manhattan. The staff are varied - mostly knowledgable but some rather rude, even for New Yorkers. They observe many Jewish holidays so check the opening hours before you go.
