It gets a VERY high rating here: www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=103&sort=7&cat=37&page=1

Have a read through - sounds good to me.

For the same money I'd rather have this with a 1.4x converter for when you need longer.

Nice but I don't REALLY need the extra speed - f4.0 across the range is pretty good and the 1.4 converter would give me a 140-420, add the DSLR crop factor and we're talking somewhere around 210-650. What I'm really after is decent focal range, crisp, sharp images and fast AF - this seems to fit the bill perfectly.

I've got the Sigma 2X converter and it's about as good as 2 milk bottle bottoms stuck on each end of a toilet roll.

My problem is I use mine on a Sigma 120-300. My replacement one is so sharp it's daft and the 2X takes the edge off it somewhat. To be honest it's not THAT bad and it may be as good as the Canon version.

As an aside, the combo makes a nice 600mm lens but it's a sod to use. You really have to use mirror lockup with any non-lightning fast shutter speed. Makes things far away nice and big though :-

This one was taken (handheld obviously) from the company roof garden at Canon Street. Again @ 600mm and with my old, not so sharp copy of the lens.

Some people say they use the Canon 600mm IS with a 1.4X teleconverter handheld. God luck to them I say. Must be like trying to handhold the Hubble Telescope!
