First D70 pics...
Discussion
...taken at the EERC Britcar meeting on Sunday at Snetterton. Took most of them on the Sports setting using the 70-300 zoom. Rattled off over 500 pics!
Even though the camera was on a pre-determined setting as opposed to me choosing how to set it, I was really pleased with the results. I got so carried away with the 'luxury' of taking seemingly endless shots that I didn't even think to change any settings!
Anyway, here's a few of my favourite pics. With more practice, I guess they can only get better!
Can I just add that I think my Nikon and I are gonna be very happy together...

All you need to practice now is image resizing and compression. I have broadband and they're still downloading!
Oops, sorry about that. I just upgraded my Photobucket account to Premium to cater for these pics and forgot to reduce the sizes before posting them.

We'll have to wean you off that "sport" mode....
- only joking! Was just wondering what settings and lens (270mm?) you were on......
Beano, all I did was put the setting dial onto sport mode, set the lens aperture ring to minimum and zoom away! (mainly between 200 and 300mm) I know it's not very original but I just wanted to get a 'feel' of the camera and see what basic results I could get.
Next time I promise to do something imaginative! I want to set the shutter speed lower to get a better feel of speed and movement.

Yup - I'm sorry about the comment! I think they're great first shots (I had a million and one shots of boats and swans in my first week! These are much more exciting.) and I was just looking to see if they would sharpen a little and maybe had a bit of room in the histogram to give them a bit more "punch".
Don't get me wrong, they're good material. Certainly captured the action well, nice and sharp at screen resolution, but wondered if they were a bit flat, suspected they were on auto-everything, and had more potential. They certainly do, and I suspect you'll grow to love the D70 for its sublime take and even its tendency to underexpose. So I had a sneaky look at your EXIF, to see what's what; hope you'll forgive me being nosey!

Hey - they finished loading
Had a more careful look at your pix and wanted to say that for a first outing they're excellent.
A few points which may or may not be helpful:
1) If your lens has an aperture ring it should be set to the minimum aperture and locked with the little doofah at all times, otherwise the camera won't work.
2) 'Sport mode' seems the obvious choice but it increases shutter speed to help freeze action. Sometimes you want a motion blur, which is why you have the potential for better results by avoiding such modes. It's a bit like taking a plane off auto-pilot: you may crash, but you can't do aerobatics on autopilot either.
3) All the pix look underexposed to me. Don't worry, that's a DSLR thing. If you have PhotoShop, now is a good time to play with it. Or you can look un the manula for 'Highlight display', 'Histogram display' and 'EV'.
The doors of SLR-dom open before you...

Thanks for the kind comments. I haven't puchased a copy of Photoshop yet (spent quite enough last weekend as it was!) but I'm sure I'll succumb sooner rather than later.
I'll have a play with the points you mentioned, Simpo, regarding brightening them up a bit. I had the aperture lens ring locked with the little doofah 'cos it wouldn't let me take a pic first of all and I had to read the troubleshooting section to find out why!
Once again, thanks for the advice and comments.

Shoot RAW, and download a copy of Rawshooter from www.pixmantec.com for free and you will get a lot of the flexibility you require without having to use Photoshop.
To be honest Photoshop is just a touch-up/spot-removal tool for me now in my workflow...

Great pics, Trackside I love the first one where the Porker's back tyre is off the rim and it's still managing to lift a front wheel!
Martin.
PS - how do Porche and Ferrari qualify for a Britcar race?
Thanks Martin.
There's a new top class this year to cater for pukka GT cars i.e. over 380bhp, I think. Superb series to watch and be around with a good variety of cars racing. Very open and friendly atmosphere in the pits and paddock and quite a lot of PHers involved, racing and spannering.

There's a time for that, but IMHO he should master the camera before adding yet more complexity.
You may shoot RAW all the time and love it, but different people have different requirements. You can process RAW perfectly well in PS with ACR and only have one lump of software to worry about.
