Thanks for the comments.
Complete newbie to Photoshop, and yes did need to start up those propellers!
Was shot from Sloane Square so by the time they started spreading out over the Mall, went out of view.
I know the exposure isn't right, damned tricky against the sky, but practice, practice, practice eh?

Don't worry, dark planes on bright sky is virtually impossible to do unless the light is just right. You can try about +2 EV (which will get the planes brighter but lose the sky) or if it's a single plane, keep it in the middle and spot meter.
You can always post the original and let us play wth it...

Here's another, didn't play with the props, hope those beauties don't fall out the sky!

Feel free to play around with it, all helps with the learning process

Also, how do you post actual pics as opposed to links?
Put [pic] before and [/pic] after yout http with no spaces.
Is there any chance of the full file foe the top pic as I'd love to print it and send it to my father-in-law?
Martin.

This was taken on
1/320 sec plus 2 Exposure compensation. 100ASA.
I didn't want to silhouette the aircraft or go much over 1/400 as you stop the props.
This one was at
1/200 sec plus 2 Exposure Compensation. 100ASA.
I wound up the EF so as to get as much detail on the aircraft as possible. Also it tends to slow the shutter speed a bit aswell

could you expand apon "shadows and highlights"? Where do I find them and how should I use them?
It's in Image>Adjust, along with most of the other toys. It works out the dark and light areas, then lightens the dark ones and vice versa, thus reducing the overall contrast. You can control the amount with sliders. Use with caution though as it can make a shot look artificial, and you can get an odd red hue on skin tones.
Meantime, I'm wondering what 'winding up the EF means'
