Discussion
Following on from my D-SLR numpty thread ( http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=195493&f=109&h=0 ) for which I have to thank you all for your input .....
I have finally decided on a Nikon D50.
Now, shopping around I've found 2 good bundles with the AF-S DX 18-55mm ED lens.
However, I have an option of either:
a 70-300mm GS lens
or
an AF-S DX 55-200 mm ED
I can no details on the web anywhere, and I'm wondering if anyone had an opinion on either of the above.
As a reminder - my criteria is typical 'domestic', with wildlife/floral close-ups thrown in for good measure (and a smattering of jewellery shots too (for ebay)).
For example, we're off to Longleat for the day - and it would be nice to get some good shots.
I promise this will be my 'last' numpty' posting, as I intend on getting the kit this week.
Many thanks in advance,
K

Swings and roundabouts.
But I would go with the 18-55
www.nikon.co.uk/press_room/releases/show.aspx?rid=156
...and buy a telephoto at some future satge. (70-300 ED is good)
Almost all my shots are taken with a similar 17-55 ... It'll do most things, but unfortunately you won't get too close to wildlife (its equiv to 82.5 mm film)... but:
You may find the others won't let you take any 'normal' photos (landscapes/beaches/family shots etc) as they are a bit too 'long'.
The 'all rounder' here is the 18-55.
..and add more lenses as needed.

Steve,
Thanks for the reply.
I must apologise for making myself clear (in the middle of dinner).
Both the bundles I've seen come with the 18-55 as standard.
But where the 2 bundles differ is with the 2nd lens included.
Just curious if anyone had an opinion either way on either the 70-300GS or the DX 55-200ED.

You won't regret it.

I can find the 55-200:
www.europe-nikon.com/category.aspx?countryid=20&languageid=22&catId=121
...but not a 70-300 'GS'. I think they mean 'G', which is the economy version.
The advantage of the 55-200 is the AF-S (silent wave) focusing - very fast and quiet.
The advantage of the 70-300 is extra telephoto.
For me the AF-S would swing me to the 55-200. Once you've tried AF-S, the old motor-driven lenses seem very ponderous in comparison.
To make sure, I'd go along to the shop, stick the 55-200 on and see if the 'long end' gives you enough telephoto for your needs.
