Following the splendid advice in the recent threads about scanning slides and transparencies (many thanks to all who advised!) I am now the proud owner of an Epson 4990 scanner (I have no idea what I am doing though!)

However, despite my lack of expertise in these things I managed to scan a few bits today to test. These are from the first of 70 boxes of slides and were taken in 1961;

I see the owner of the jag left his boot open to act as a rear wing ! Good collection of photos, I wonder how much all those cars are worth now ?

It might be an idea to invest in a blower brush or even one of the rocket type blowers to help get rid of some of the dust before scanning.

Lovely cars.

You could try reducing the red and yellow levels to lose that 'faded old slide' look - unless that's part of the atmosphere?

The E type is being driven by Graham Hill (you can just see the ‘tache and his distinctive helmet).

I have no problem with anyone tweaking the images and would welcome tips and hints. I am a complete novice on this and could use all the help I can get.

I have obviously reduced these for posting on PH but the original scans were on 4800 dpi and with Digital Ice on. I did clean the slides before scanning but perhaps I wasn’t vigorous enough? I didn’t want to damage them so I just used a clean piece of muslin cloth.

I have lots more photos and will post a few of the more interesting ones as they come up.

Might be worth getting a can of compressed air from Jessops to clean the dust off them first Great to see the circuit without the gravel traps 4 metre high fencing.

Martin.

Is that Jag being driven by one Mr G. Hill? Or are my eyes deceiving me?

Superb shots. I take it the marks on the sky and so on are some sort of mould rather than dust? If so it may be a little tricky to do much with it other than retouch the result.

Are you using Epson Scan or Silverfast SE?

Are you using them directly or through Photoshop (Elements 2 or have you upgraded?)

Did you apply any colour correction or other adjustments when scanning?

Have you become impatiently addicted to discovering all the other wonders from you stored boxes? Not yet? It will come.

These are absolutely superb pics. So much atmosphere; please don't 'fiddle' with them too much, I feel you'll destroy the soul of them and therefore make them look too modern as if they were taken at a Brands Hatch HSCC round this year as opposed to nearly 45 years ago. I love the one of the Aston at Paddock Hill Bend. There looks like there's a white car off at the bottom of the hill too.

Please post more. They are spectacular!

Try to blow off the dust rather than wiping it off as you are quite likely to scratch the slides otherwise. If you blow on them with your mouth you end up with little saliva marks on the slides too ! (been there, done that 'cos I was hurrying )

DOH! your post about Mr. Hill must have been seconds after I refreshed the page ...

Re sizes - to be honest unless you plan to print the things VERY big - A2 or something - I would not bother with 4800dpi scans. 2400 seems to be quite adequate and I am beginning to think possibly better all round for any sharpening and so on required. Likewise 48bit colour depth is great BUT you would be hard pushed to tell the difference with 24bit 99 times out of a 100. And most editing packages don't deal with 48bit anyway - only the latest versions or professional stuff basically.

That will save an enormous amount of time and disk space yet you can always seek the topmost quality for the 'special few'.

Likewise Digital Ice. It's not a sure thing but I have not seen much net gain, except with prints but even then it is not a complete solution, and I would rather save the time. Again, there can be exceptions.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the the future results!

Superb pics! I like the old-ish looks of them actually.
It's part of the atmosphere.
I just fell in love with that Aston... What is it exactly?

Just a tweak - Colour Balance wasn't getting me anywhere but Auto Colour did, followed by two helpings of warm photo filter and some extra saturation:

I don't think they have ever quite matched this car in terms of grace and elegance! I personally love the old faded colours, makes a change from all the ultra bright digital pics we are so used to.

Oh yes, should have known that!
The 'Z' on the side...
Didn't realize they had that chrome strip on the side. Confused me.
Easily one of the most beautiful cars ever (including all cars that haven't been built yet).

The GTO is nice too, but in my opinion the roof is too high compared to the long and low bonnet.

I agree wholeheartedly. The scans are absolutely wonderful, and whilst a bit of expert tweaking might enhance them, they should certainly be left looking their age.

Please please keep posting them (and would it be possible to get copies at desktop wallpaper size? )! Have you got any plans to publish them online? It would be fantastic to see the whole collection.

The Zagatos were all subtly different. This is DB4GT/0200/R, which I think might be the one now owned by Simon Draper of Palawan Press.

Who took the pictures?

Wouldn't a book filled with such photographs be nice?
