Just in chronological order. The locations are a test for the PH Kiwis

Hmm, you're right (I'll blame the jet-lag). There's also a space missing in the text on the chair shot, doh.

Great pics, Simpo. I'd love to go back there sometime soon.

The pics I'd bring home wouldn't be half as good as those, though.

Very nice!!
Not jealous at all....

Lighthouse is my fave too (I do think it would benefit from some tricky to make the sun halo symetrical, very picky I know but that would make it exceptional for me).

great shots there, I really like the feel of the b&w ones, and no. 13

as for locations:

2)the Earnslaw on lake Wakatipu (Queenstown)

3) up the side of the Matukituki valley near Wanaka. (looks like maybe the Rob Roy glacier)

13) Mackenzie Country / South Canterbury

14) and 15) Otago peninsula (either between Port Chalmers and Aramoana or along Portobello drive on the other side of the harbour)

19) looks like a road I know on top of Otago peninsula (turns off from between Port Chalmers and Long Beach) but could be anywhere really.

20) Fiordland/West coast somewhere.

did I get any right?

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I'm glad you like them 'cos I can't do any better! Basically trying to take good photos stops you having a real holiday, as you're always 'on duty' looking for the next good shot.

Good to see the Kiwis mixing it on the Anorak, sorry, Photo forum; I hope I did your country justice. There are photo opportunities almost everywhere, but the variety can be bewildering and you have to think on several tracks at once. I have identified at least three categories: (1) Postcard shots, like the TSS Coleslaw. Anyone can do these if you happen to be standing in the right place and the weather is nice. (2) Coffee table shots - these don't stand alone but still look nice. I have lots of these! (2) Poster shots that you might hang on the wall. These are my favourite kind, because you need to be able to see it every day and still get pleasure from it; they present the biggest challenge and taking the picture is only the start. I found the Aspiring Mountains image particularly moving - it was the place she never lived to enjoy and the chair is a memorial/tribute. I can imagine her spirit in that chair. And yes, it does look over the Aspiring Mountains from a ridge just south of Wanaka that I got to by helicopter. After Googling, nobody seems to know it's there.

Some shots represent a genre: 'Sheds of NZ' appeals to me and I have quite a few assorted sheds/shacks in stock. 'Beaches' is another, though they lose something in translation as you don't get the movement and pounding surf, so you really need to major on composition. 'Foliage' is nice to look at but surprisingly hard to do well; you have to battle exposure and white balance in a green environment with bright sky peeping through. Plenty more where that came from.

Mr Get: Provided my target Oh and Andris Apse, but as he lives there he has an unfair advantage. I like to think that a few of mine wouldn't look out of place in his books. As a tourist you simply can't get all the shots you dream off - if Mount Cook is covered in cloud on the day you're there, you've lost it. I lost the Catlins, Doubtful Sound and Arthur's Pass to solid rain all day. I never did get a good waterfall shot.

Bacardi: I thought you'd go for (8)! (19) was rescued from a dreadful day when the fog closed in, so bollox to colour, because there wasn't any, and go for composition and tone instead. In fact most of the BW shots evolved from dull days.

Lighthouse - you can have the halo central, but then the windows are off-centre. I use PS to enhance but not often to cheat (though the seagull moved about an inch to the left as it was too close to the edge!)

OK, locations.

1: Millers Beach, Stewart Island. You can only get there by water taxi from Golden Bay; it's the site of the abandoned whaling station.

2: TSS Earnslaw leaving Walter's Peak Station, Lake Wakatipu

3: Just south of Wanaka. Can't be more precise without an OS map.

4: By Weka Street, off IS6 near Makarora

5: Gillespies Beach, near Fox Glacier

6: Agapanthus near Awatoitoi (I'm surprised no-one got that )

7,8,9: Castle Point

10: Napier (well done Whirly and Esprit)

11: Champagne Pool, Rotorua.

12: Ti Trees at Indico Bay, Urupukapuka Island, Bay of Islands

13: From Glen Eden Road, Twizel. 'Marlboro Country'! Well MacKenzie District actually.

14, 15: Boatshed near Portobello, Otago Peninsula.

16: Off Brighton Road near Concord, Dunedin

17: Ocean View near Dunedin. Just as I was lining up the shot, a family walked through the gap and the girl lagged behind.

18: Tunnel Beach near Dunedin. Works in BW too.

19: An aborted trip to Sandymount, Otago Peninsula, due to fog.

20: Podocarp forest in Pounawea, Catlins.

Gravel Ben wins with 5/20

Now you lot have to come over here and find 20 nice photos of GB

Ah yes, cool pics, gives my itchy feet just looking at them . . . jack the job in and travel for a year . . . I did a lot of serious thinking about moving to NZ a few years ago bug didn't have the balls to do it (golden handcuffs also an issue) . . . ;-) . . . bump . . . back to reality . . . Have a couple of weeks in the Coloradian Rockies at the end of next week - snowsports mainly but a few days min allocated to photog . . . snow and overexposure - I'm sure I'll be battling the histograms too . . . ;-)

I'm trying to set myself some objectives . . .

a) no broken bones or serious injuries (it's happened before)
b) Snow Pics
c) Large Expanse Pics
d) American Differences Pics

Victory is mine! (but only because you took more photos in my area)

ps I'll try to post up a few shots of Mt Cook in the next few days to make up for you missing it. my amateur efforts won't be up to your level but some of them I like.
