OK, i'm planning on buying a new compact digital camera to compliment my Canon 300D SLR for times when it's just not possible to take the SLR.

There is a canon that I quite like as it's very compact, it's got lots of features, a big screen, pretty for the girlfriend , and priced at €300.

From what I've found the Canon IXUS 65 fits the bill nicely. (HP ones are rubbish since I've played with their entire range as I work for HP), but this seems ok. Especially the price and features.

Does anyone have this little fella and what do they think of it?

Ta!

Don't have that exact model, but the Ixus range has always been pretty good.
Older ones are a bit slow to take the shot, maybe this has been improved on the newer ones?

I've read the review on DP Review and it seems pretty impressive. Thing is I don't have time to trawl around the shops so i'm just going to order on the net as it's a lot cheaper that way too.

I was also looking at the Sony T9, but the Canon outclasses it by quite a bit:

- ISO: Canon 800, Sony 640
- Shutter Speed: Canon 1/1500sec, Sony 1/1000sec
- Canon has more programmable features
- Massive 3" screen!
- Real viewfinder (which I really like). The sony doesn't have this.
- Proper memory! (ie. SD Cards)

It's also quite a masterpiece in terms of design.

Deleted silly bit of tech spec which I misunderstood. Thanks to Luca for this....

Have you had a look at the 800IS? I got one to compliment my 20D and it is outstanding - tiny, great features, 4x zoom and IS !!!

It's so handy to have a good cam that fits in the pocket.

Untill the time when it's in your shirt pocket and you bend to pick something up!

Ouch! Got me a nice little crumpler neopreme bag to keep it safe from scratches. Also buying some screen protectors as the screen is so big and I want to keep it free of marks.

Anyhow....finally got the battery charged and had a quick tinker. Lots of great features, but I need to play with the focus settings a little more. The first batch of photos seemed a little out of focus. Still....lots of fun things to play with now

P.S. The video quality is excellent!

Our plumbers used to wreck a lot of mobiles in this way - usually down the toilet!

That happened with my $550 LX1... I was inspecting my car after an, ahem, run-in with local law enforcement, and I bent over to the dreaded sound of electronics hitting pavement...

Suffered a minor scratch along the top border of the LCD.

Sickening isn't it..... :shudder:

A bit like when I got knocked off my motorcycle. Even though I didn't see too much, I remember the sickening noise of my bike smashing and grinding against the floor. Horrible...

Yeeeah I remember the horrible sound of metal scraping metal when a wench merged into my car about a year and a half ago. Almost as bad as the electronics-hitting-pavement sound.

In the 70s my dad picked up his tripod with the Nikon on . . . and the cam fell off when he swooped it over his shoulder.

Just a minor dent in the suncap . . . Hurrah for the titanium body and metal suncap.
