Before Christmas dadio borrowed my car, and it came back like this:

I bought and fitted a new door and then took the car to a local bodyshop. Getting the car back prompted a photographic excursion and so on a murky 30th of December I headed out. Not the best weather for a shoot, but I enjoyed myself and am beginning to learn my new Nikon D70s. After a bit of photoshop contrast boosting, here are some shots:

I'm still learning the camera, but eager to try some shots in the city, and also motion shots whilst leaning out of my brothers car like a loon - although that does invole allowing my farter to drive the 'teg again. Your thoughts and comments please. thx.

If you drive over that bridge fast enough, can you get air?

You must have tried....

Sorry, I have few photography skills so can't comment on your efforts! Repair looks good though!

I like the vertical shot best too. Your compositions are good, just a shame the weather was so poor really.

I like the portrait one the best, a different angle to usual and it holds promise of blasting off into the distance.

BTW, what caused the damage?

It would have looked interesting if you could have combined the vertical pic with a long exposure light trail photo.

It looks to me like the processing on these varies quite a lot.

The last one and the vertical one look pretty good, nice and punchy contrast. The others all look a bit under exposed to me.

Another vote for 5 here, although I think if you got rid of the numberplates, 2 and 7 would also be rather nice.

Thanks guys for your comments. i'm still learning the camera, and am taking a few shots of the same thing with different settings, so i know how the camera will behave. I have contact with a professional photographer and have approached him about a little informal tuition when I have a bit of time. May leave it till the weather gets better, otherwise i'll forget what i've been taught.

The house and location of the pics is Kedleston Hall not far from Allestree in Derby. The car gets photographed as it provides varying shots in different locations.

I let my dad borrow the teg to take my mum and youngest brother to Nottingham, as his XJR was in the garage awaiting a new differential www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=302637&f=85&h=0

He's driven the car a number of times, and is fairly familiar with it. He is also a very good driver and does in the region of 30,000 per year. Family were travelling back to Derby and came over a crest down to some traffic lights, for some reason he couldn't find the brake and his foot moved over to the clutch. There were was a car in both lanes at the lights and the teg was doing about 30mph. Father decided to find space and turned the car in to the gap between the Galaxy and Audi. The gap was just too small, and the tyre of the galaxy, which was slightly on lock, made contact with the side of the teg, pushing the door skin onto the side impact beam and crumpling the rear quarter panel.

I wasn't best pleased, but glad that they were OK, and the accident was not more serious. The teg didn't touch the Audi, and damage to the galaxy resulted in a bit of paint rub on the extremety of the wheel arch.

Good bit of driving by the old man, even if he was a major numpty for missing the brake pedal.

Digger, probably the wrong chap to ask. Have a search for threads on d40, or post a new one up. Being a newish model, i'm sure they are great for starting off on dslr cameras, and Nikon stuff is great. JS

The thing that would stop me considering a D40 above all is that it doesn't have a focus motor in the body, limiting you to only using AF-S lenses.

Since it's at the budget end of the market, this seems odd to me as AF-S lenses are more expensive.
